Overview

Position Summary:

This role is based at the Family Clinic located in Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia.

Fort Gregg-Adams is situated just three miles east of Petersburg, VA, 116 miles from Washington D.C., and 21 miles from Richmond, the capital of Virginia. Richmond boasts a vibrant cultural scene, featuring top-notch museums, universities, a symphony orchestra, professional ballet and opera, as well as a variety of theater companies and art galleries. The area provides convenient access to both the ocean and mountains, along with the nation's capital. Civilian personnel play a crucial role in supporting the mission of the Department of Defense. They bring essential skills that are not readily available within the military, which are vital for military operations. The Department of Defense combines the expertise of both military and civilian members to create a cohesive Total Department of Defense.

Key Responsibilities

As a Family Practice Physician, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting examinations for active duty personnel, family members, and other authorized beneficiaries to identify diseases and medical conditions.
  • Providing appropriate care or referring cases that require hospitalization or specialized treatment.
  • Performing various medical procedures, which may include vasectomies, simple fracture reductions, lumbar punctures, emergency deliveries, endometrial biopsies, joint aspirations/injections, and proctosigmoidoscopies.
  • Assessing physical requirements and performing physical examinations for different categories of military and civilian personnel.
  • Supervising medical students, externs, residents, and other non-professional healthcare providers as necessary.
Qualifications

Essential Requirements for Supervisory Physician (Family Practice):

  • Education: A Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited institution in the United States or Canada, or a foreign equivalent recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or through a fifth pathway certificate for those who completed premedical education in the U.S. and graduate education abroad.
  • Postgraduate Training: After obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, candidates must have at least one year of supervised clinical experience, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program at an accredited institution.
  • Licensure/Certification: Candidates must hold a permanent, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
  • Experience Required for GP-14: Relevant experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. To qualify, your resume must detail at least four years of residency training in Family Practice or equivalent experience. This experience should encompass a broad range of medical duties focused on comprehensive patient care for individuals of all ages, including advanced examination, diagnosis, and treatment to ensure effective post-discharge care.
