Internship Next Generation Sequencing information

What is an internship in next generation sequencing (NGS)?

An Internship in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience with advanced DNA sequencing technologies in a laboratory or research environment. Interns typically assist with sample preparation, data analysis, and interpretation of sequencing results under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role helps participants develop practical skills in genomics, bioinformatics, and molecular biology, which are valuable for future careers in biological research, healthcare, or biotechnology.

What types of projects or tasks can an intern expect to work on during a next generation sequencing (NGS) internship?

As an NGS intern, you can expect to support a variety of projects ranging from sample preparation and library construction to data analysis using bioinformatics tools. Interns often assist with quality control, troubleshooting, and interpreting sequencing results under the guidance of experienced scientists. You may also collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including molecular biologists, data analysts, and laboratory technicians, gaining hands-on experience with both wet-lab and computational methods. These tasks provide valuable exposure to the entire NGS workflow and can help you identify specific areas of interest for further career development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in next generation sequencing (NGS), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern in Next Generation Sequencing, you need a background in molecular biology, genetics, or a related field, with foundational laboratory skills and coursework. Familiarity with NGS platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), basic bioinformatics tools, and data analysis software is highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate experimental results, effective collaboration, and meaningful contributions to research projects.

What is the difference between Internship Next Generation Sequencing vs Laboratory Technician?

Institute, WI • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 19 days ago

Job description

The Wistar Institute has an opening for a highly motivated Research Assistant to work in the laboratory of Dr. Christopher McGinnis as part of the Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center (VIC) at The Wistar Institute.

The McGinnis lab is interested in how tumors interact with the immune system during metastasis and developing new single-cell genomics modalities to interrogate mechanisms of pro-metastatic immune remodeling. Focusing on breast cancer, osteosarcoma, and other tumor types with lung metastatic tropism, the McGinnis Lab aims to improve our basic understanding of how tumors spread and translate these insights into the development of anti-metastatic immunotherapies.

The responsibilities of successful candidates will involve:

  • Processing tissues for flow cytometry and single-cell genomics assays
  • Molecular cloning and tumor transplantation surgeries
  • Nucleic acid analyses and next-generation sequencing library preparation
  • High-throughput drug screen experiments using ex vivo tissue slice cultures
  • Technical assistance to post-doctoral and pre-doctoral students with molecular and cellular biology experiments, and in animal studies.

A bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential. Candidates will receive personalized training as required. Competitive applicants will have strong motivation to learn and to work in a collaborative environment. Experience in the following areas is preferred: cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology (PCR, DNA cloning, etc), cell culture, flow cytometry, mouse colony maintenance and surgical techniques, and/or next-generation sequencing.

The Wistar Institute is a world leader in early-stage discovery science in the areas of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease. Wistar is committed to accelerating research advances from bench to bedside through brilliant science and distinctive approaches to collaboration among scientific investigators and academic and industry partners. Wistar’s dynamic environment supports the advancement of discoveries that will change the future of human health.

The Wistar Institute is located in the University City area of Philadelphia, in the heart of the University of Pennsylvania Campus. Wistar provides resources to its faculty and staff that enable them to conduct cutting edge collaborative research and provides for outstanding intellectual environments and state-of-the-art facilities.

We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits package.
