Functional Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, the Division Manager - Manufacturing is accountable for the overall operations and the strategic direction of the Trucking, Plants, Quality (including laboratories) and Aggregates divisions (Manufacturing). Responsibilities include land management & development, production, quality control, and distribution & sales of aggregate materials for civil construction applications.

Main Responsibilities

The incumbent of this role is responsible for managing a multi-facility material production and distribution network. The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

Safety:

  • Positively participate in the Company safety and Goal Zero initiatives and adhere to all safety requirements. Encourage the use of all Goal Zero initiatives and educate employees on them.
  • Utilize reports provided by the safety department to determine trends within your divisions and work develop solutions to improve our safety trends.
  • Review all leading and lagging indicators provided by the safety department and ensure your direct & indirect reports are compliant with safety requirements.

 

Leadership & Employee Development:

  • Work with the HR Business Partner on succession planning to promote a strategic plan for the next 1-5 years
  • As a member of the SGC Management Committee identify and implement ways to streamline and optimize efficiencies to reduce costs and improve service.
  • Integrate yourself into your divisions to be viewed as a Senior Leader by all levels of employees.

 

Strategy

  • Lead an aggregate succession, consumption vs. depletion strategy for SGC assessing the short term and long-term business needs
  • Identify short term and long-term opportunities for aggregate sources and lead any approved development of such
  • Support the SGC management committee in execution of its 3 year business strategy

Project Planning & Management:

  • Monitor the progression of the services each week to ensure we are on target for meeting our client’s material and trucking needs.
  • Lead weekly & monthly financial reporting sessions with your direct reports.
  • Prior to the start of each season, complete workforce planning for hourly staff in construction based on the upcoming project schedules.
  • Work with sales and business development to determine on which projects alternative aggregate products may be suitable and inform those clients of the available cost effective alternatives for virgin and recycled aggregate materials. 
Main Responsibilities

Management of the Manufacturing Operations (Land & Material Processing):

  • Frequently liaise with Alberta Environment & Parks (Regulator) and associated Counties to secure land leases and ensure operational compliance under the Water Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and the Alberta Land Stewardship Act.
  • Commission third party compliance audits for existing operations.
  • Support Aggregate Superintendent to prepare Reclamation Plans for the development of lands.
  • Identify 3-year capital investment needs in plant and equipment to ensure ongoing operational efficiency.
  • Work with Asphalt Plant Superintendent on production planning including planning crushing and inventory management in collaboration with General Manager Construction
  • Review annual production records and identify opportunities for process optimization and energy efficiencies
  • Lead the QC team to analyze and interpret internal quality control and external quality assurance data to ensure all materials meet the associated provincial, regional and municipal construction specification requirements and that NCR’s meet Colas Western Canada KPI’s
  • Execute and maintain Colas 6S lab and plant certifications

Industry Analysis and Growth:

  • Support sales and business development in developing short- and long-term strategies to grow the business by analyzing local market trends, competitor growth, and existing & new client opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain client and stakeholder relationships and promote SGC in a positive and professional manner.
  • Participate in local industry organizations/committees and provide recommendations to your manager on programs/organizations the Company should be involved with.

 

Budgeting and Cost Management:

  • Responsible for reviewing and finalizing the Manufacturing financial numbers for formal budget meetings and month-ends. Work with the SGC controller and VP to ensure the information you provide is aligned with the Company’s annual goals.  
  • Effectively manage and improve DSO (Days Sales Outstanding) and work the Controller to implement action plans as required. 
  • Assess variable and fixed cost structure understanding how to optimize QC, Aggregate and Plant costs

 

Employee Engagement and Retention:

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of Quality, Manufacturing, Aggregate and Trucking Superintendents
  • Work with the HR Business Partner to support action plans to improve the Company’s DE&I measures.
  • Promote the employee engagement survey (Dialogue) and support the HR Business Partner and Dialogue Committee in meeting action plans.
  • Ensure communications to employees regarding Company standing is coordinated with the SGC management committee and aligned with the Colas values
Qualifications

Education, Training, and Certifications:

  • A degree or diploma in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • CET, P. Eng, or MBA designations are considered strong assets.
  • Valid driver’s license to effectively support the travel requirements of the job.

 

Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience working in the roadbuilding industry or construction industry. Strong preference is given to candidates with work experience in the manufacturing of roadbuilding materials (asphalt, soil cement, gravel, etc.).   
  • 5+ years of project management experience.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience, strong preference will be given to candidates who have supervised other leaders.
