Job description

The WhiRRL-flex group at the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Research Center, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, Cleveland, OH is recruiting for a Biomedical Electronics Technician to provide technical support and perform project management objectives as a member of an interdisciplinary research and development group. The technician will work in collaboration with faculty, clinicians, and students to design and investigate new medical devices and restorative technologies for Veterans with mobility impairment. Responsibilities include electronics and firmware development, 3D modeling, prototype fabrication, mechanical testing,, data collection, and preparation of technical documentation. This role contributes to translational research efforts, including human-subjects research, publications, and conference presentations. While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of them to the position


Additionally, the Biomedical Electronics Technician manages and supports shared research facilities, including oversight of core facility equipment, materials, and day-to-day operations. The position provides training and mentorship to undergraduate researchers and summer interns, ensuring safe and effective use of laboratory resources. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Identify the work to be done to fulfill project requirements and objectives, plan and carry out the procedural and technical steps required, seek assistance as needed, independently coordinate work efforts with supervisors, and characteristically submit only complete, exceptional work. (20%)

2. Assist lab members with the design, planning, and execution of protocols and experiments. (20%)

3. Develop, maintain, and update all lab-related Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) documents and guidelines under the supervision of PI to ensure efficient lab operations. (20%)

4. Select and procure any required equipment, hardware, software and/or tools for projects by contacting outside vendors, marketing, and/or sales representatives to exchange information as needed. (10%)

5. Provide support to the senior team members to prepare and submit regular monthly and quarterly technical progress reports. (15%)

6. Establish supply inventory, manage laboratory supplies, and coordinate routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. (5%)

7. Performs technical and record-keeping duties in conformance with defined standards and regulatory policies. (5%)

8. Design, maintain, and interrogate databases for research-related operational information. (5%)

9. Perform other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS & CONDITIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Biomedical Engineering or equivalent experience

2. Experimental background and experience with research environments

3. Experience with at least one of Arduino, ESP-IDF, and/or Ti CCS12 

4. Experience with at least one of Java, Matlab, and C++

5. Excellent organizational skills and ability to synthesize information across several technical efforts

6. Ability to work well in a team environment and having strong communication skills (written, oral)

7. Strong problem-solving skills: able to identify root causes, propose alternative approaches, and carry out feasible solutions

8. Experience in 3D modeling/ printing, laser cutting, basic machining, and other prototype fabrication techniques is a plus (Solidworks preferred)

9. Must be a United States Citizen
