Job description

Engineer the technology behind our innovative products!

As a Senior Engineer, Embedded Systems Development, you will work in the Product Development Division performing design and development tasks on software embedded in hardware devices for professional audio products. You will also work cross-functionally with various teams, bringing creative problem-solving and fresh perspectives to the design, development, and optimization of advanced embedded systems.

 
The ideal candidate can demonstrate deep knowledge of Android-based products and Embedded Android/AOSP environments to effectively manage Shure devices, support system functionality, and drive the development of reliable, high-performing embedded solutions.

This role is based in our Niles, IL headquarters and will be hybrid.


  • Design, develop and test software for embedded Android based products with focus on standard networking protocols for managing Shure devices and supporting system functionality
  • Tailor and build custom Android OS (AOSP) images, working closely with SoC board support packages (BSPs) and HAL layer integrations. 
  • Write, optimize, and maintain low-level C/C++ native code, JNI bindings, and custom Android HALs (Hardware Abstraction Layers) to interface with peripheral devices and sensors. 
  • Build key system services, background processes, and high-performance applications in Kotlin and Java. 
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, including memory leaks, thread contention, power consumption, boot-time optimization, and driver interactions. 
  • Work as part of a cross-functional development team to design and implement cutting edge audio products and technologies 
  • Estimate, organize, and document tasks 
  • Practice established software development methodologies and principles focusing on separation of concerns, re-usability, maintainability, minimized complexity, high cohesion and low coupling 
  • Model designs using UML and related methods; develop use cases to model real-time systems behavior 
  • Architect maintainable system designs 
  • Review the design and code developed by peer engineers 
  • More senior engineers will mentor junior and entry-level staff members 
  • Other duties as assigned 

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Computer Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 4 years of embedded software development experience with at least two years focused on Embedded Android/AOSP
  • Demonstrated understanding of software design, analysis and programming using C++ and/or C, Java, Kotlin 
  • Strong expertise in C++ (Modern C++11/14/17) for native development and system performance. 
  • Deep proficiency in Java and Kotlin for framework and system service layer development. 
  • Hands-on experience with AOSP build systems (Soong, Ninja, Android.bp, Android.mk), Android HAL architecture (HIDL/AIDL), system services, and Linux kernel drivers/interfaces. 
  • Experience using the Android NDK, JNI development, and IPC mechanisms (Binder, Sockets, Shared Memory). 
  • Proficiency with Git, Linux command-line tools, Android Studio, ADB, and debugging tools (GDB, Valgrind, Systrace/Perfetto). 
  • Experience solving problems following SOLID and OO design principles
  • Demonstrated expertise with debugging using protocol analyzers, Wireshark, etc. 
  • Experience with software version control and release 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to analyze complex interdependent variables 
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and lead junior engineers
  • Quality consciousness
  • Bonus: 
    • Experience with custom board bring-up on ARM architecture (e.g., Qualcomm, NXP, Rockchip). 
    • Hands-on knowledge of hardware protocols like UART, I2C, SPI, GPIO, USB, and Bluetooth/BLE. 
    • Exposure to automated testing for embedded devices and CI/CD pipelines tailored for hardware/AOSP. 
    • Knowledge of Android security architectures (SELinux policies, trustzones, secure boot).

PAY TRANSPARENCY
Shure offers a competitive compensation structure that is reviewed annually to attract, hire, and retain the industryโ€™s top talent. Base salaries vary based on qualifications, geography, experience, and expertise in each respective discipline. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum base salary for the opportunity. The base salary for this position ranges from $115,600 to $185,000, with a midpoint target. If your salary expectations do not align, still apply as we are often flexible on the seniority of posted positions. All positions also include an award-winning benefits package.
