Internship Linear Programming information

What is an internship in linear programming?

An Internship in Linear Programming gives students or recent graduates hands-on experience solving optimization problems using mathematical modeling techniques. Interns typically work with experienced data scientists or operations researchers to develop and implement algorithms that maximize or minimize certain objectives, such as cost, time, or resource allocation. The internship may involve using software tools like MATLAB, Python, or specialized optimization packages, and offers practical exposure to real-world problems in industries like logistics, finance, or engineering.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an internship focused on linear programming?

As an intern specializing in linear programming, you will likely support projects that involve optimizing processes, resource allocation, or scheduling using mathematical models. Typical tasks may include data collection, formulating linear programming problems, running optimization software, and interpreting results to provide actionable recommendations. You'll often collaborate with data analysts, engineers, or operations teams to tackle real-world business challenges and may have the opportunity to present your findings to stakeholders. This hands-on experience helps build both technical and teamwork skills essential for a future career in operations research or analytics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in linear programming, and why are they important?

To excel in an Internship Linear Programming role, you need a solid understanding of linear algebra, optimization techniques, and mathematical modeling, often supported by coursework in operations research or applied mathematics. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, as well as optimization tools like CPLEX or Gurobi, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help interns interpret results and collaborate with teams. These competencies are crucial for translating complex data into actionable solutions and supporting decision-making processes in real-world business or research environments.

What is the difference between Internship Linear Programming vs Data Analyst Intern?

AspectInternship Linear ProgrammingData Analyst Intern
Required SkillsMathematics, optimization, programmingData analysis, statistics, Excel, SQL
Work EnvironmentTech, consulting, financeBusiness, tech, marketing
Common Employer TypesConsulting firms, tech companiesCorporations, market research firms

Internship Linear Programming focuses on optimization techniques and mathematical modeling, often in technical or consulting settings. Data Analyst Internships emphasize data interpretation, visualization, and statistical analysis. While both roles involve data and problem-solving, they differ in skill sets and industry applications, with Linear Programming internships leaning toward mathematical modeling and Data Analyst internships toward data-driven decision making.

What careers use internship linear programming?

Internship experience in linear programming is valuable in careers such as operations research analyst, supply chain analyst, data analyst, and optimization engineer. These roles involve applying mathematical models and algorithms to improve decision-making, often using tools like MATLAB, R, or Python. Strong analytical skills and knowledge of optimization techniques are essential in these fields.

  • Install, configure, and debug Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems and develop operator interface graphical modules.

Job description

The Bradbury Co., Inc. is recognized around the world as the leader in quality roll forming solutions. We are a family-owned company located in Moundridge, KS. Our headquarters employs around 350 employees.

SUMMARY

For Summer 2027 - The Bradbury Internship Program for the Controls Engineering Department has opportunities for individuals to work in various engineering and technical disciplines. Interns could work with our Startup Teams, Programming Teams, or Electrical Design Teams. It allows an intern to not only demonstrate their skills, technical aptitude, and understanding of control systems, but also show their personal strengths, desire to succeed, and ability to interact with others in a manufacturing setting – all done with the supervision, guidance and coaching of an experienced Controls Engineer. The time period must consist of no less than two months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Setup EthernetIP communications on Rockwell based control components.
    • IP Address, Gateway Address, and Subnet Mask.
    • This setup is included on all networked components including Network managed switches, PLCs, I/O modules, HMIs, motion controls systems, and possibly 3rd party components such as bar code readers and printing systems.
  • Install PLC programming stored on a Bradbury Network drive into a completed machine using software and hardware located on our production floor.
    • Perform basic debug of the PLC logic making sure the Inputs and Outputs on the machine are functional and aligned correctly with the PLC programming (I/O Check).
    • Work with Controls Engineers to make sure no errors exist in the PLC program.
  • Tune motion control systems that could include Linear or Rotary servo motors or Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) controlling induction motors.
  • Perform Installation and setup of Human Machine Interface (HMI) terminals applications.
    • Install the system ‘image’ and setup communications to the system control components.
    • Debug the interface screens to verify interface with the PLC and other control components.
  • Show programs written in C# in a Microsoft Windows environment.
    • Assemble programs and install them on Bradbury HMIs.
    • Develop operator interface graphical interface modules to interface the operator to the machine control.
    • Discuss the usage of the SQL database and how data can be imported and exported to and from a customer’s production data or the Bradbury TSC part download software.
  • Show and explain PLC logic written in Rockwell Automation’s RSLogix Studio platform.
    • Demonstrate the ladder logic created to operate on an AB Logix PLC that is reading sensor, switch, and position data and activating motor, valve, and indicator outputs based on a sequence of events or basic IF, AND, OR logic.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
