The Division of Student Affairs fosters student development as well as aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off-campus aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; student accessibility & testing services, housing & residential life; military & veterans affairs, community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services.
Campus Recreation and Wellness provides a comprehensive co-curricular experience for Elizabeth City State University Students. Housed in the Division of Student Affairs, Campus Recreation and Wellness is committed to providing programming to enhance the student experience while encouraging healthy habits. In addition, Campus Recreation and Wellness serves the university community in providing programs to support an active lifestyle on the campus. Campus Recreation and Wellness supports programming in competitive sports, fitness, aquatics, and informal recreation.
Description of Work
Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness, the Coordinator of Campus Recreation & Wellness is responsible for managing the Viking Wellness Program (wellness & fitness programs & events for students, faculty and staff), Viking Venture (off-campus programming initiatives, e.g., team- building exercises, small group interaction, ropes courses), and providing support to overall management of the Melvyn and Vonda Reed Riley Wellness Center, Aquatics/Swimming Pool and Outdoor Recreation Field. This position is responsible for collaborating with Academic Affairs to ensure proper maintenance of the pool and Wellness Center. The successful candidate will be committed to student development by providing an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. The individual will have oversight of student interns, work-study and student employees. The successful candidate is responsible for identifying potential partnerships to provide Viking Adventure to the ECSU community. The ideal candidate will develop, implement, and supervise programs to include but not limited to; intramural sports, club sports, ESports (and other virtual gaming), and special events. The ideal candidate will develop, implement, and supervise programs to include but not limited to: group exercise, personal training, special programs, and management of wellness center. The candidate is expected to collaborate with university partners on campus and represent the department on university wide committees. This position is expected to work 40 hours a week and be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.

  • Possess effective public relations, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to evaluate the achievement of departmental goals and objectives through formal assessment and professional reports.
  • Possess the experience, knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Possess a knowledge of sports rules, equipment used, and sports officiating experience.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, scheduling and evaluating all team sports and individual/dual activities within Intramural sports.
  • Possess a knowledge of student development theories.
  • Possess program-planning skills and ability to work with little direct supervision and perform multiple tasks.
  • Responsible for budget preparation as it relates to competitive sports and special events.
  • Contributes to strategic plan for Campus Recreation and Wellness by establishing short- and long-term goals.
  • Handles day to day operations of intramural sports program to include disciplinary issues, updating brackets, reviewing and revising policies as needed.
  • Collect statistical data to be utilized in established reporting practices.
  • Possess the ability to plan and organize programs and activities.
  • Possess the skill to negotiate contracts, supervise students and employees.

Minimum Training and Experience
Possess a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in exercise science, kinesiology, sport management, health education, health promotion or related field with at least one year of experience or a combination of education and experience.
