Description
The Academic Advisor will advise students for Arts and Sciences majors in departments as assigned by the Assistant Dean.
Job Duties
  • Advise students in the Arts and Sciences departments with regard to scheduling for upcoming terms and other relevant conversations.
  • Serve as primary/guardian advisor for all assigned students.
  • Consult with faculty advisors in the relevant departments with regard to advising.
  • Analyze initial transfer student transcripts and refer students to correct departments. Serve as guardian advisor until students graduate.
  • Assist with graduation checks for seniors the semester before intended graduation.
  • Update Degreeworks for all assigned students.
  • Enter notes in Navigate system as appropriate.
  • Monitor students' mid-term grades and final grades and intervene with students who are on academic warning or are underperforming.
  • Refer students to Career Development Center as they consider changing majors.
  • Work with students on suggesting minors.
  • Make contacts with other schools to promote minors.
  • Refer students to Career Development Center for information on internships (particularly sophomores and juniors)
  • Develop student schedules prior to Bulldog Days.
  • Meet with students at June and August Bulldog Days.
  • Attend some recruiting events (Choose Samford, Samford Showcase etc.)
  • Suggest outstanding students for campus honors (Ambassadors, SRT, ODK, honor societies)
  • Become proficient in the EAB software in order to make strategic decisions with regard to student academic success.
  • Other duties as specified by the Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum six (6) months of experience in Academic Advising, Counseling, Education or a related field.
  • Highly organized and able to maintain energy and focus in a busy student-centered environment.
  • Communicates with excellence interpersonally in written and oral forms.
  • Relates well to college students with an intuitive understanding of when students need intervention.
  • Understands student recruitment and retention issues.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to organize well and to maintain calendars, gather data, prepare reports and document student interactions and plans.
  • Ability to report to work daily, five days per week.
  • Ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work continuously throughout the day.
  • Occasional travel as required.
  • Current, valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a field such as Higher Education or Counseling.
