Job Title

Temporary Accountant I with a Work with a large, mission-driven public agency that supports essential water, environmental, and infrastructure services for a major metropolitan region

Duration: 960 Hours in a fiscal year
Work Schedule: Full-Time: 40hrs/week

Role Overview

The Accountant I is an entry-level professional accounting position responsible for performing detailed accounting work in support of centralized accounting functions. The role assists with financial reporting, account reconciliations, payroll accounting, fixed asset accounting, and general ledger activities while developing expertise in governmental accounting practices, financial analysis, and auditing. Employees work under close supervision and are expected to grow into full professional accounting responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform professional accounting duties related to the analysis, maintenance, and auditing of accounting records.
  • Prepare and post journal entries for payroll, benefits, accruals, allocations, and other accounting transactions.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, asset and liability accounts, subsidiary ledgers, and payroll records.
  • Process invoices, expense reimbursements, and other financial transactions while ensuring policy compliance.
  • Assist in preparing financial reports, schedules, supporting documentation, and audit work papers.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and prepare related reports.
  • Process and validate payroll transactions, establish payroll information for new employees, and monitor payroll-related deductions and compliance requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve inquiries from internal customers, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Support year-end closing activities, budget adjustments, and financial audits.
  • Provide support and knowledge sharing to temporary staff, interns, and colleagues as needed.

Required Experience

  • One (1) year of professional accounting experience.
  • Experience working with accounting records, reconciliations, financial reporting, or payroll-related processes is desirable.


Preferred:

  • Governmental accounting experience.
  • Payroll accounting and payroll processing experience.
  • Experience with ERP or enterprise financial/payroll systems.
  • Experience supporting audits, fixed asset accounting, or financial reporting activities

Required Skills

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial accounting practices.
  • Understanding of financial recordkeeping and reporting procedures.
  • Basic governmental accounting knowledge.
  • Account reconciliation and general ledger maintenance.
  • Payroll processing and payroll audit/reconciliation skills.
  • Fixed asset accounting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with ERP financial systems and enterprise payroll systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, Infor, or similar).
  • Business mathematics and financial analysis skills.

Education / Certifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field


Substitution

  • Directly related experience may substitute for education on the basis of 1.5 years of experience for one year of education, up to four years


Certifications / Licenses

  • Valid California Driver's License may be required if driving is an essential function of the position.
  • CPA, CMA, CGFM, or other accounting certifications are not required but would be considered preferred qualifications. (Not specified in the classification but beneficial for recruitment purposes.)
