What is an internship HPC engineer?

Internship HPC (High Performance Computing) Engineers are students or recent graduates who assist in designing, optimizing, and maintaining advanced computing systems used for complex tasks such as scientific simulations, data analysis, and machine learning. These interns often work with supercomputers, clusters, and parallel processing software to support research and engineering applications. Their responsibilities may include coding, troubleshooting hardware or software, and collaborating with more experienced HPC engineers. An HPC internship provides hands-on experience in a rapidly growing technology field and can lead to full-time roles in research, academia, or industry.

What types of projects and technologies will I typically work with as an internship HPC engineer?

As an HPC Engineer intern, you can expect to work on projects involving the setup, maintenance, and optimization of high-performance computing clusters. Daily tasks may include configuring networking, managing job schedulers, optimizing code for parallel processing, and troubleshooting hardware or software issues. You'll often collaborate with researchers, software developers, and IT staff to ensure systems run efficiently and meet user needs. This internship provides hands-on experience with technologies like Linux, MPI, Slurm, and various compilers, offering valuable exposure to both hardware and software aspects of supercomputing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship HPC engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship HPC Engineer, you typically need a background in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with strong programming skills in languages like C, C++, or Python. Familiarity with Linux environments, parallel computing frameworks (such as MPI or OpenMP), and common HPC job schedulers is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative, research-driven environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to complex computational projects and ensuring efficient use of high-performance computing resources.

What is the difference between Internship Hpc Engineer vs Hpc Engineer?

AspectInternship Hpc EngineerHpc Engineer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed relevant degreeBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time professional setting, independent project management
Industry UsageTraining and skill development in high-performance computingDesign, optimize, and maintain HPC systems in industry or research

The main difference is that an Internship Hpc Engineer is a trainee or entry-level position focused on learning and gaining experience, while an Hpc Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for managing HPC systems. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward a full career as an Hpc Engineer, with the latter requiring more experience and expertise.

Job description

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) ( https://www.aps.anl.gov/ ) at Argonne National Laboratory invites applicants for a one-year term AI Production Engineer position. This entry-level role will help move artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models developed by APS teams into reliable production use across the facility.

The successful candidate will work with scientists and AI developers to deploy and operate AI capabilities across the APS, spanning real-time analysis of high-rate x-ray data, AI-guided experiment steering, and extraction of scientific knowledge from measurements.

The role will support physics-aware and foundation models for imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy; large-scale and streaming inference from HPC training environments to GPUs at instruments; and local LLM/VLM inference and agentic workflows.

Responsibilities include optimizing inference performance, validating accuracy and generalization, integrating models into experimental workflows, monitoring model quality and data drift, maintaining model and data versions, maintaining AIOps workflows in the CAI group, and implementing AI-specific CI/CD.

The appointee will also support closed-loop and continual-improvement workflows that use new data and human feedback to improve validated models over time.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

This position is part of the Computational science and AI group (CAI) ( https://cai.xray.aps.anl.gov/ ), a cross-disciplinary team with expertise in machine learning, large-scale AI inference, high-performance computing, and x-ray science. The appointee will collaborate across the APS, receive guidance from experienced scientists and AI developers, and contribute reliable facility-wide AI capabilities.

Candidates are encouraged to include a cover letter in addition to a CV.

Position Requirements

Bachelors and 0+ years' experience, Masters and 0+ years' experience, or equivalent

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering.

Hands-on Python experience for AI/ML through coursework, projects, internships, or employment.

Familiarity with PyTorch and running trained neural-network models for inference.

Understanding of ML concepts including training, validation, model evaluation, overfitting, and performance metrics.

Ability to learn model versioning, automated validation, and AI-specific CI/CD practices.

Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Preferred
  • Experience running open‑source LLMs or VLMs locally using Hugging Face Transformers, vLLM, llama.cpp, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with batched, streaming, or distributed inference and improving throughput, latency, or memory use.
  • Familiarity with continual learning, active learning, automated evaluation, or feedback-driven model improvement.
  • Familiarity with GPUs, Linux, containers, or high-performance computing environments for AI workloads.
  • Experience with scientific data and monitoring model quality, data drift, or inference performance.
