Research Computing Specialist (PSS1)
Rowan University is seeking an experienced and adaptable System Administrator to join our Research Computing team. In this position, you will be responsible for supporting hardware and software needs related to scientific computing used in education and research at Rowan University. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise System Administration, and working closely with the Director of Operations of the Center for Scientific Computing (CSC), you will be a member of the Enterprise System Administration team as well as the CSC community.
What you get to do:
  • Collaborating with faculty and researchers to architect and estimate computational equipment requirements.
  • Architecting and configuring computational equipment for both individual teaching/research labs and centralized computing facilities (High Performance Computing), as well as setting up user access, compiling, installing, and optimizing scientific computing software, and participating in the delivery of user training.
  • Optimizing the enforcement of security configurations and standards for scientific computing equipment per the project-specific security level requirements.
  • Contributing to the design and execution of dedicated research environments.
  • Partnering with faculty and researchers to streamline the "Get Technology" procurement process for expedited approvals.
  • Providing support and maintenance of scientific computing systems and software, including routine software and hardware monitoring and upgrades, and user access and usage management.
  • Creating and maintaining an online user resource that includes implementation and support documentation for Information Technology Resources and Tools (IRT), such as Technical Design Documents (TDDs), support procedures, and knowledge articles.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a related discipline or Bachelor's degree and 2 years equivalent work experience.
  • At least one year of experience with system administration of Linux-based HPC systems.
  • The ability to balance long-term projects and strategic initiatives with short-term emergent requests.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Commitment to customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to set goals and achieve them.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to support a 24x7 environment.

Nice to have:
  • Experience supporting Research Environments and High Performance Computing.
  • Hands-on experience managing Linux and Windows desktops.
  • Experience working with networking, including subnets, VLANs, IP addressing.
  • Experience working in a production data center environment.

What we offer:
  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is AFT: Range 27 ($85,550 to $98,388), with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors. For internal applicants, salary is determined per the Pay Adjustment formula (NJAC 4A:3-4.9 & 4.10).
