Earning this certificate can enhance your resume, demonstrate your expertise to employers, and may help fulfill requirements for advanced degrees or certifications in health informatics.

What are the typical responsibilities of an intern pursuing a Health Informatics Certificate?

As an intern working toward a Health Informatics Certificate, you can expect to assist with activities such as data collection and analysis, supporting the implementation of electronic health records (EHR), and helping to maintain data accuracy and security. Job Description
A Day in the Life

This role functions within the Health Informatics team, partnering with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perioperative nurses, procedural departments, operational leaders, and Information Systems stakeholders to optimize the use of the electronic health record (Oracle Health) in support of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
  • Consistent with the Senior Clinical Informaticist role, this position applies clinical informatics expertise, workflow design, and system optimization to improve clinical practice, support end users, and advance organizational priorities across surgical and procedural settings.
  • This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of approximately 40-60% on-site presence within surgical and procedural environments, balanced with remote work. On-site support may vary based on project work, workflow optimization efforts, training activities, go-live support, and operational needs.
  • While aligned to and primarily supporting perioperative services, this role contributes to system-wide initiatives and is expected to design workflows that are scalable and consistent across all Munson Healthcare settings.

What You'll Focus On
While operating within the broader Clinical Informatics role, this position will have a primary area of focus supporting perioperative and procedural workflows across the continuum, including:
  • Supporting optimization of workflows across Pre-Admission Testing, Pre-Operative Services, Operating Rooms, Anesthesia, PACU, Endoscopy, and procedural areas
  • Partnering with surgeons, anesthesia providers, perioperative leaders, and frontline staff to translate care delivery needs into EHR workflow design and system solutions
  • Advancing initiatives that improve perioperative workflow efficiency, communication, documentation quality, and patient throughput
  • Ensuring alignment across workflows impacting scheduling, documentation, orders, preference cards, procedural reporting, and care transitions
  • Providing at-the-elbow support, rounding, and real-time issue resolution to strengthen adoption and trust
  • Identifying opportunities to enhance workflow integration, usability, patient safety, and clinician experience across the surgical continuum

Core Responsibilities
  • Serve as an informatics liaison between clinical end users, operational leaders, and Information Systems
  • Analyze, design, configure, test, and support clinical information systems and workflows
  • Act as a consultant for process redesign and workflow improvement initiatives
  • Support project implementation, change management, and user adoption
  • Identify, triage, and coordinate resolution of system and workflow issues
  • Participate in governance, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration efforts
  • Perform rounding and engagement with perioperative and procedural teams to maintain strong communication and alignment

Qualifications
What's Required
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare or related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a licensed or certified healthcare professional role or a minimum of 2 years in the role of Clinical Informaticist at a MHC facility with demonstrated ability to successfully understand and interact in the clinical environment per defined criteria.
  • Experience with the Electronic Health Record and Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE) required.
  • Schedule flexibility is required to accommodate customer needs

Preferred
  • Current RN licensure
  • Clinical background with strong experience in perioperative nursing, procedural services, surgical services, or perioperative operations
  • Experience supporting perioperative and/or procedural workflows within an EHR environment
  • Familiarity with Oracle Health (Cerner) or similar EHR platforms, including workflow optimization
  • Experience supporting surgical documentation, perioperative orders, preference cards, anesthesia workflows, procedural reporting, or surgical scheduling processes
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze workflows, document current and future states, and lead process improvement efforts
  • Experience supporting interdisciplinary teams in surgical and procedural environments
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to engage frontline staff, providers, leaders, and cross-functional partners
