Internship Graphics Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Graphics Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Graphics Programmer, you need a solid understanding of computer graphics principles, linear algebra, and programming languages like C++ or Python, often supported by coursework or personal projects in graphics. Familiarity with graphics APIs such as OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan, and experience with shader languages and development environments are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting help interns stand out. These skills are important for translating creative ideas into efficient, visually compelling software and for learning quickly in a fast-evolving technical field.

What types of projects or assignments can I expect during a Graphics Programming internship?

As a Graphics Programming intern, you can expect to work on tasks such as developing shaders, optimizing rendering pipelines, or creating visual effects for real-time applications. Common assignments may also include debugging graphics-related code, prototyping new rendering techniques, and collaborating with artists and senior engineers to integrate visuals into the project. You'll likely have the chance to contribute to both individual and team projects, gaining practical experience with industry-standard tools and graphics APIs. This hands-on exposure is valuable for building your portfolio and understanding professional workflows.

What does an internship in graphics programming involve?

An internship in graphics programming typically involves working with experienced developers to design, implement, and optimize visual elements and rendering techniques for software applications, video games, or simulations. Interns may work with graphics APIs like OpenGL, DirectX, or Vulkan, and gain hands-on experience with shader programming, 3D modeling, and performance optimization. The role provides valuable exposure to both the technical and creative aspects of computer graphics, and often requires familiarity with languages like C++ or Python.

Job description

Accelint is a mission-driven technology company focused on strengthening national security and supporting critical industries. We build the technologies that help operators and organizations see what's happening, make faster and better decisions, take action with confidence, and stay ready for what comes next. Our work includes advanced sensors, autonomous systems, mission command and control software, AI-enabled training and simulation, and tools that improve logistics, maintenance, and overall readiness.
For nearly 30 years we have supported military and civilian agencies across the Department of Defense, U.S. allies and partners, and essential industries. When you join Accelint, your work directly contributes to protecting national security and strengthening the systems our society depends on.
Accelint brings together the talents of Hypergiant, Forward Slope, Systems Innovation Engineering, SoarTech, and Highbury Defense Group under one mission, with each entity contributing deep expertise in its domain. This role is part of our Systems Innovation Engineering (SIE) division, which specializes in readiness and logistics, autonomous platforms, and sensor technologies. SIE develops resilient, integrated systems that enhance situational awareness, sustain mission readiness, and deliver reliable performance across air, ground, and maritime environments.
As a Graphic Designer Intern, you will be responsible for a variety of digital products based in Captivate and the Unity game engine. You will work with highly skilled and motivated delivery teams made of Instructional Systems Designers (ISDs), Software Engineers, 3D Artists, and Tech Leads to design, develop, test, build, and deploy customer training software - and have a blast doing it!
Accelint's ideal candidate is responsible for supporting all kinds of design efforts of these digital products, validating their efforts with the program Creative Leadership and other Creative Operations team members regularly to accomplish this. They are responsible for the accurate implementation of their eventual designs into the game engine, as well, and work closely with our Software Engineers to ensure this. This position will workshop their efforts with the Creative Director and Creative Operations team weekly to ensure their designs and implementations are cohesive. They're open to critique and can pick up brand standards and iterate on them easily.
Our ideal candidate also has a portfolio that demonstrates the core competencies of a graphic designer and should submit an online portfolio and/or website of your work with your application. While the best Graphic Designer portfolios typically display a proficiency in general graphic design, other efforts in motion graphics, branding, and logomark design, collaborations with others, and video work are all acceptable. We also recommend galleries demonstrating an understanding of typography and principles of design.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Craft motion graphics and ensure implementation by software engineers is solid.
  • Design for desktop-based and/or tablet-based UIs.
  • Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with software engineers and other stakeholders.
  • Illustrate design ideas to product stakeholders using mockups as needed.
  • Provide feedback to software engineers as designs are implemented to ensure user experience is cohesive and accurate.
  • Regularly workshop efforts with the Creative Director and the Creative Operations team to maintain a cohesive design and user experience of the digital product.
  • Leverage design thinking and questioning techniques to develop strategies where pathways are not clear.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors' Degree (or currently enrolled and working towards one) in Graphic Design or related field. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree.
  • Working knowledge and skill in design tools, for example, Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, After Effects, and/or other Adobe Creative Suite products, as well as optional (but not required; see Preferred below) prototyping tool like Sketch, Figma, Balsamic, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present complex concepts clearly and persuasively across audiences at various levels of understanding.
  • Attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with other designers and developers to implement new ideas.
  • Currently holds an active U.S. national security clearance or be able to receive and maintain one.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
  • Familiarity with Adobe Captivate authoring tool.
  • Previous experience in collaboration with system and software engineers on UI implementation.
  • Working knowledge and/or understanding of prototyping tools like Sketch, Figma, Balsamic, etc.
  • Experience outside of 2D production that demonstrates a variability of design skills.
  • Understanding and appreciation of standard user interface design concepts.
  • Understanding of foundational design principles and practices, typography and color, and multi-device usability standards.
  • Active-duty military experience.

Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • This position typically requires working in a lab or office setting with some exposure to manufacturing and testing environments.

Clearance Requirements
Some positions will require access to U.S. National Security information. Positions that require this access will be required to receive and maintain a U.S. government personnel security clearance (PCL). In order to qualify for this position, the candidate must be a US Citizen and either currently possess this National Security eligibility or be able to complete the investigation application process with a favorable determination and maintain that eligibility throughout their employment.
