Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer information

What does an internship graduate embedded software engineer do?

An Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer assists in developing and testing software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or specialized hardware. They often work under supervision, collaborating with senior engineers to design, code, and debug embedded applications. Their responsibilities typically include writing code in languages like C or C++, troubleshooting hardware-software integration, and participating in team meetings. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in embedded systems development and helps build foundational skills for a career in embedded engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship graduate embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer, you generally need a solid foundation in C/C++ programming, embedded systems concepts, and a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM, AVR, or PIC), debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable embedded solutions and collaborating successfully on technical projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an internship graduate embedded software engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include developing and testing firmware, debugging hardware-software integration issues, and writing code for microcontrollers or embedded devices. Typical responsibilities often involve collaborating closely with senior engineers and hardware teams, participating in code reviews, and contributing to system-level testing. This role provides valuable hands-on experience with real-world products, exposure to industry-standard development tools, and insight into agile or iterative development processes. You'll gain practical skills and a better understanding of embedded systems through both individual assignments and teamwork.

What is the difference between Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectInternship Graduate Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldsUsually holds a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant technical field
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, internship setting, often in a corporate or research labFull-time professional role in development teams, often in tech or manufacturing companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies hiring interns to evaluate potential future employeesCommonly used by companies developing embedded systems in automotive, consumer electronics, or industrial sectors

The main difference is that an Internship Graduate Embedded Software Engineer is an entry-level intern gaining hands-on experience, while an Embedded Software Developer is a full-time professional responsible for developing embedded systems. Interns typically work under supervision, whereas developers have more responsibilities and independence in their roles.

Job description

Position Title: Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Huntsville, Alabama

Job Type: Full Time

About EO Solutions

EO Solutions is a rapidly growing aerospace and defense company focused on advancing capabilities in Space Domain Awareness and Directed Energy Systems. Our teams work across Hawaii, Nevada, Alabama, and remote locations to solve critical national security challenges with innovative, mission-focused technologies.

Position Overview

EO Solutions is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the development, integration, and testing of embedded control software for advanced High Energy Laser (HEL) systems.

This position will primarily support our directed energy programs, developing software that interfaces directly with sensors, actuators, electronics, communications hardware, and control systems.

We are looking for engineers who enjoy working at the boundary between software and electrical hardware. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in embedded programming and enough electrical engineering knowledge to troubleshoot real systems using schematics, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other laboratory equipment.

This position is open to candidates ranging from talented new graduates to experienced embedded software engineers. Responsibilities and technical leadership opportunities will scale with experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software and firmware in Rust or C/C++ for real-time control systems.
  • Integrate software with sensors, actuators, motor controllers, communications interfaces, and other hardware.
  • Develop and test communications between embedded devices and higher-level control systems.
  • Debug hardware/software interactions using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers.
  • Develop automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests.
  • Participate in system integration, laboratory testing, and field testing.
  • Work closely with software, electrical, mechanical, optical, and controls engineers.
  • Develop maintainable software using Git, code reviews, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Document software interfaces, designs, test procedures, and results.
  • Use modern AI-assisted software development tools while independently verifying generated code for correctness, safety, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience programming in Rust, C, or C++, through professional work, internships, coursework, research, or personal projects.
  • Understanding of embedded systems and basic electrical engineering concepts.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and troubleshoot hardware/software interfaces.
  • Familiarity with common embedded interfaces or protocols such as Ethernet, I2C, UART/RS-232/422, or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and interest in hands-on hardware/software development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following is helpful:

  • STM32 or other ARM-based microcontrollers.
  • Embedded Rust or C/C++ firmware development.
  • Ethernet, UDP/TCP, EtherCAT, or other real-time communications.
  • Motor control, servo systems, sensors, or FPGA interfaces.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing and automated test equipment.
  • Python for test automation, analysis, or engineering tools.
  • GitLab CI/CD or other automated build and test systems.
  • Linux embedded development.
  • Aerospace, defense, robotics, controls, or Directed Energy systems.

Desired Attributes

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys making software interact with real hardware.
  • Is comfortable getting into the laboratory and troubleshooting a system rather than stopping at the software boundary.
  • Approaches embedded development with a strong emphasis on testing and correctness.
  • Is curious and willing to learn unfamiliar hardware, protocols, and technologies.
  • Can work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Values simple, maintainable solutions over unnecessary complexity.

EO Solutions Corp is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
