Internship Geologic Mapping information

What types of projects and fieldwork can I expect to participate in during a Geologic Mapping Internship?

As a Geologic Mapping Intern, you can expect to engage in hands-on fieldwork such as collecting rock, soil, and structural data, creating detailed field notes, and assisting with the preparation of geologic maps. Projects often involve collaborating with professional geologists and other interns to survey sites, analyze samples in the lab, and use GIS software to digitize map data. You'll also have opportunities to present findings and contribute to ongoing research or state geological surveys. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world geoscience applications and teamwork in both field and office environments.

What are Internship Geologic Mapping positions?

Internship Geologic Mapping positions are temporary roles for students or recent graduates who assist professional geologists in creating and updating geological maps. Interns typically collect field data, analyze rock and soil samples, and use mapping software to document geological features. These internships provide hands-on experience with mapping techniques, data collection, and interpretation, helping interns to develop practical skills essential for a career in geology. They often involve both fieldwork and office-based tasks, and offer valuable exposure to real-world geological projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Geologic Mapping, and why are they important?

To succeed in an Internship Geologic Mapping role, you need foundational knowledge in geology, earth sciences, and mapping techniques, typically supported by progress toward or completion of a relevant degree. Familiarity with GIS software, field mapping tools, and data collection systems is highly valued. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this position. These competencies enable accurate data collection, interpretation, and collaboration, which are vital for producing reliable geologic maps and contributing to research projects.

What is the difference between Internship Geologic Mapping vs Geoscience Technician?

AspectInternship Geologic MappingGeoscience Technician
Required CredentialsTypically enrolled in or recent graduate of geology or earth science programsAssociate's or bachelor's degree in geology, earth science, or related field
Work EnvironmentField-based, outdoor mapping projects, often in remote locationsField and laboratory work, supporting geologic data collection and analysis
Industry UsageInternship positions in geological firms, research projects, or government agenciesFull-time roles in mineral exploration, environmental consulting, or government agencies

Internship Geologic Mapping focuses on gaining practical field experience in mapping geological formations, often as part of an educational program. In contrast, Geoscience Technicians perform more routine data collection and support tasks in both field and lab settings. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in experience level and job responsibilities.

cores and geo-mechanical data. Explores for and develops hydrocarbons by making geological interpretations to explain the data. Performs geologic studies to mitigate risk, evaluate leads and prospects and improve reservoir characterization. Applies geological interpretation to map or model reservoirs to efficiently and economically manage hydrocarbon extraction. Interprets and analyzes well logs and prepares structure, isopach and net pay maps. Involved with collecting and analyzing competitive activity data and providing recommendations to management. This position is located in downtown Houston, TX. Hybrid work schedule is an option for remote work on Mondays and Fridays. Level and salary commensurate with experience.
Essential Job Functions
  • Applies knowledge of geosteering & geology to select pilot wells, steer horizontal wells, and analyze subsurface data for development planning
  • Proactively and effectively communicates with field/ office personnel
  • Integrates geologic data with engineering and operations teams to optimize well placement and mitigate drilling hazards
  • Manages and reviews service provider performance
  • Provides geologic input for field development planning, the execution of upcoming drilling programs, and proposed surveillance for recent discoveries
  • Demonstrates fundamental log analysis skills & understanding of key well logs
  • Fully capable of preparing maps or displays for internal or external purposes
  • Updates maps, grids and other information to reflect new information obtained from drilling, core samples and other sources
  • Assists with a full range of exploration and development activities, from geologic evaluation of prospect areas, creating geologic maps and crosssections, to performing core and well log analysis
  • Applies geologic and petrophysical knowledge to help explore core acreage positions and identify potential opportunities in adjacent areas
  • Supports integrated subsurface teams, providing appropriate subsurface analysis, e.g. risk assessment & mitigation, probabilistic hydrocarbon estimates, & the reservoir impact of potential wells
  • Uses well logs, seismic data and regional geologic trend data to create play and prospect scale maps for evaluation of exploration opportunities
  • Constructs geologic models by using maps and sections across a diverse set of software platforms
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary exploration teams, identifying & resolving anticipated geologic problems
  • Monitors and evaluates competitor activity and geologic understanding within an assigned geographic area
  • Applies geoscience principles to solve problems and builds technical business knowledge
  • Evaluates moderate-scope problems using data, business awareness, and independent judgment
  • Manages multiple tasks, meets deadlines, & contributes to overall project plans
