Internship Geologic Mapping information

What types of projects and fieldwork can I expect to participate in during a Geologic Mapping Internship?

As a Geologic Mapping Intern, you can expect to engage in hands-on fieldwork such as collecting rock, soil, and structural data, creating detailed field notes, and assisting with the preparation of geologic maps. Projects often involve collaborating with professional geologists and other interns to survey sites, analyze samples in the lab, and use GIS software to digitize map data. You'll also have opportunities to present findings and contribute to ongoing research or state geological surveys. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world geoscience applications and teamwork in both field and office environments.

What are Internship Geologic Mapping positions?

Internship Geologic Mapping positions are temporary roles for students or recent graduates who assist professional geologists in creating and updating geological maps. Interns typically collect field data, analyze rock and soil samples, and use mapping software to document geological features. These internships provide hands-on experience with mapping techniques, data collection, and interpretation, helping interns to develop practical skills essential for a career in geology. They often involve both fieldwork and office-based tasks, and offer valuable exposure to real-world geological projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Geologic Mapping, and why are they important?

To succeed in an Internship Geologic Mapping role, you need foundational knowledge in geology, earth sciences, and mapping techniques, typically supported by progress toward or completion of a relevant degree. Familiarity with GIS software, field mapping tools, and data collection systems is highly valued. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this position. These competencies enable accurate data collection, interpretation, and collaboration, which are vital for producing reliable geologic maps and contributing to research projects.

What is the difference between Internship Geologic Mapping vs Geoscience Technician?

AspectInternship Geologic MappingGeoscience Technician
Required CredentialsTypically enrolled in or recent graduate of geology or earth science programsAssociate's or bachelor's degree in geology, earth science, or related field
Work EnvironmentField-based, outdoor mapping projects, often in remote locationsField and laboratory work, supporting geologic data collection and analysis
Industry UsageInternship positions in geological firms, research projects, or government agenciesFull-time roles in mineral exploration, environmental consulting, or government agencies

Internship Geologic Mapping focuses on gaining practical field experience in mapping geological formations, often as part of an educational program. In contrast, Geoscience Technicians perform more routine data collection and support tasks in both field and lab settings. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in experience level and job responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Support hydrogeology/surface water hydrology projects in the environmental services industry
  • Conduct field investigations (aquifer testing, surface water discharge gauging, and geologic logging/mapping)
  • Support project permitting, industrial development, and site remediation through the development/application of numerical groundwater flow and transport models
  • Develop/execute technical investigations for hydrologic characterization of groundwater systems in environments comprised of unconsolidated deposits, sedimentary rock, and fractured crystalline rock
  • Perform quantitative analysis of hydrologic and hydrogeological data (probabilistic analysis/forecasting)
  • Develop technical reports/memos to support the permitting of natural resource development projects
  • Provide construction support/administration

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or related engineering
  • Master’s degree in water resources engineering, geology, or a related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in water resources or hydrogeology, preferably supporting mining applications preferred
  • Experience performing hydrogeological and hydrologic investigations, analysis, and modeling, through internships or co-ops
  • Experience with report preparation and technical writing
  • Proficient with groundwater and surface water modeling tools (MODFLOW/MT3D, FEFLOW, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XP-SWMM, or similar numerical codes)
  • Experience developing and applying numerical groundwater flow, constituent transport, and surface water hydrology/hydraulic models, including work in unconsolidated, sedimentary, fractured rock, and deep bedrock environments preferred
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and executing hydrogeologic and hydrologic field investigations, including packer testing, multi-well aquifer testing, and analysis of field and large data sets preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to perform data analysis, statistical/probabilistic modeling, and time-series forecasting for hydrologic and hydrogeologic systems preferred
  • Experience integrating hydrogeologic and hydrologic analyses with feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, and mine permitting efforts preferred
  • Familiar with NEPA processes/documentation and mine permitting preferred
