Purpose
Applied Research Laboratories' (ARL:UT) Strategic Communications Office (SCO) is seeking a Front-End Web Developer & Designer to support the look, feel, and usability of ARL's websites. This role is ideal for an early-career professional with a foundation in front-end development, an eye for design, and an interest in user experience. The junior developer will work closely with and be mentored by a senior developer, gaining hands-on experience across a range of web projects.
SCO provides a spectrum of creative products while ensuring compliance with sponsoring agencies and university guidelines on messaging and security. We manage web design and development for ARL:UT's intranet and public-facing websites, and serve as caretakers of the facility's historical archives, which include reports, photos, former director holdings, and noteworthy decommissioned equipment.
Responsibilities
Front-End Web Development
  • Support the development, updates, and maintenance of ARL's internal and external websites.
  • Build and maintain responsive, accessible user interfaces using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Assist in implementing features and resolving issues under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Manage and complete web requests through ServiceNow with attention to detail and timeliness.

Visual and UI Design
  • Learn and apply best practices in web development, performance, and security.
  • Contribute to the visual design and user interface of ARL's web properties.
  • Translate user needs and feedback into clean, user-friendly design solutions.
  • Help maintain consistent branding, layout, and interaction patterns across platforms.
  • Collaborate with designers and senior staff to keep sites visually engaging and intuitive.

Accessibility & Standards
  • Support efforts to meet accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508).
  • Learn and apply accessibility best practices.
  • Assist with testing and improving site accessibility.

Collaboration & Development
  • Work closely with the senior developer to build skills in both development and design.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to support web-related needs.
  • Contribute to SCO initiatives alongside designers, communications specialists, and archivists.

Required Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience with web design, UI design, and/or front-end development.
  • Foundational knowledge of front-end web development (HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript).
  • Portfolio or examples of academic, internship, or personal projects demonstrating front-end work and/or UI design.
  • Interest in user experience (UX) and visual design.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (GitLab or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new tools and technologies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in computer science, web design, and user experience design.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Internship or project experience in web development or UI design.
  • Exposure to accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508).
  • Experience using ticketing/support platforms (ServiceNow or equivalent).
