Internship Flow Cytometry information

What is an internship in flow cytometry?

An internship in flow cytometry is a temporary position, often taken by students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience working with flow cytometry technology in a laboratory setting. Interns assist in running flow cytometry experiments, analyzing cell samples, maintaining equipment, and learning the principles of cell sorting and data analysis. This internship helps individuals gain practical skills and knowledge needed for careers in biomedical research, immunology, or related fields. It is an excellent opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals and contribute to ongoing research projects.

What do interns do in a flow cytometry internship?

As a flow cytometry intern, you can expect to engage in a mix of hands-on laboratory work and data analysis tasks. Typical responsibilities include preparing samples, operating flow cytometers under supervision, assisting with staining protocols, and learning to analyze and interpret complex cellular data. Interns often work closely with research scientists and lab technicians, gaining exposure to both the technical and analytical aspects of the role. This experience provides a strong foundation for understanding cell sorting, immunophenotyping, and the broader applications of flow cytometry in research and clinical settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed for an internship in flow cytometry?

To thrive as a Flow Cytometry Intern, you need a solid background in biology or a related science, with foundational knowledge of cell biology and laboratory techniques, often supported by ongoing undergraduate or graduate studies. Familiarity with flow cytometry instruments (e.g., BD FACSCanto, LSRFortessa), data analysis software (such as FlowJo), and standard lab protocols is typically expected. Attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and the ability to communicate effectively with research teams are critical soft skills. These skills ensure accurate experimental results, smooth collaboration, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to scientific research projects.

What is the difference between Internship Flow Cytometry vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectInternship Flow CytometryLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsTypically enrolled students or recent graduates, some may have coursework in biology or related fieldsAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, biotech companiesHospitals, research labs, clinical settings
Job FocusLearning flow cytometry techniques, assisting with experimentsPerforming routine lab tests, sample preparation, data recording

Internship Flow Cytometry positions are primarily educational roles for students gaining hands-on experience in flow cytometry techniques. Laboratory Technicians are more experienced roles focused on routine lab operations. Both roles are common in research and clinical settings, but internships emphasize learning, while technician roles involve ongoing responsibilities.

Job description

Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. We thrive on finding and cultivating talented people who are passionate about what they do. Join us and be a part of the diverse Caltech community.
Job Summary
The Research Technician will provide hands-on support for quantitative, cell-based experiments studying protein function and signaling circuits in cultured mammalian cells, working primarily with flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy under the guidance of senior lab members. The position supports ongoing research in quantitative cell biology by assisting with experiment setup and execution, routine data collection, and maintenance of cell lines and reagents.
Essential Job Duties
  • Assist with quantitative cell-based experiments under supervision, following established protocols: mammalian cell culture, transfection, fluorescent labeling, and treatment with ligands or other perturbations.
  • Assist in acquiring single-cell data by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, and support routine data organization and preliminary analysis.
  • Assist with routine molecular biology procedures, including cloning, plasmid and mRNA preparation, RNA isolation, qPCR, and siRNA-mediated knockdown, following established protocols.
  • Support data analysis using established computational pipelines and help prepare figures and summaries of results for review by senior lab members.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a life sciences or engineering field and a minimum of 1 year of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Some hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique (through coursework, internships, or prior lab work).
  • Familiarity with standard molecular biology methods, such as cloning, RNA isolation, and PCR or qPCR.
  • Exposure to fluorescence-based measurements, such as flow cytometry or microscopy.
  • Wet lab experience.
  • Basic data analysis skills using Python, R, or comparable tools.
  • Accurate record-keeping, strong organization, and the ability to follow detailed protocols and work well as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or hands-on experience with flow cytometry or fluorescence microscopy instrumentation.
  • Exposure to cell signaling pathways or genetically encoded biosensors.
  • Familiarity with Python or R for basic scientific data analysis.
  • Some prior experience with mRNA transfection, siRNA knockdown, or routine cell line maintenance.
