What does an internship fintech software engineer do?

An Internship Fintech Software Engineer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications for financial technology companies. They typically work under the guidance of experienced engineers to write code, test software, and implement new features that improve financial services like payments, lending, or trading. Interns gain hands-on experience with technologies such as APIs, cloud platforms, and security protocols, while also learning about regulatory requirements in the finance industry. This role provides valuable exposure to both software engineering and the fast-evolving fintech sector.

What kinds of projects do fintech software engineer interns typically work on, and how do these contribute to their professional development?

As a Fintech Software Engineer intern, you'll often be assigned to projects involving the development or improvement of financial applications, such as digital payment platforms, lending systems, or data analytics tools. These projects provide hands-on experience with real-world codebases, exposure to modern programming languages, and the opportunity to work closely with experienced engineers, product managers, and sometimes clients. The collaborative environment and challenging assignments help interns develop both technical and soft skills, often leading to a deeper understanding of the fintech industry and potentially opening doors for full-time roles after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship fintech software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Fintech Software Engineer, you need a strong understanding of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), algorithms, and basic finance concepts, typically supported by coursework or relevant project experience. Familiarity with financial platforms, version control systems like Git, and exposure to fintech tools or APIs is highly beneficial. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn are crucial soft skills that help interns adapt quickly and contribute effectively. These skills ensure interns can efficiently develop secure, reliable software solutions in the fast-evolving fintech industry.

Staff Software Engineer

Nomi Health

Salt Lake City, UT โ€ข On-site

Job description

We were tired of hearing that healthcare is broken, so we decided to do something about it. At Nomi Health, we believe the care itself isn't broken - it's the business of healthcare that gets in the way. Every year, more than $1 trillion is wasted on paperwork, delays, and middle layers that drive up costs and keep people from the care they need.
We're rebuilding the system so it works the way it should: clear prices you can trust, faster payments that keep providers focused on patients, and data that helps employers make better decisions. Our work has already touched more than 30 million lives - from local communities in Michigan to some of the largest companies in the country.
About the Role
Nomi Health is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for the applications and platforms powering our healthcare and financial operations.
You will lead the design and delivery of highly available systems supporting claims, remittance, payment processing, provider operations, and other critical healthcare workflows. You will work closely with engineering, product, operations, and business leaders to turn complex requirements into reliable, scalable solutions.
This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who can establish technical direction, solve ambiguous problems, raise engineering standards, and help distributed teams deliver successfully.
What You'll Do
  • Establish the technical direction and architecture for complex applications and platform capabilities.
  • Partner with product managers and business stakeholders to evaluate implementation options, clarify tradeoffs, and define practical delivery plans.
  • Lead projects through the complete software development lifecycle, from discovery and system design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Design and build highly available healthcare and payment applications using Go, TypeScript, React, and AWS services.
  • Break large, ambiguous initiatives into well-defined technical workstreams that distributed engineering teams can execute.
  • Identify architectural risks, dependencies, failure modes, and operational requirements before implementation begins.
  • Review system designs and code to ensure solutions are reliable, secure, maintainable, testable, and cost-effective.
  • Establish and reinforce engineering practices related to automated testing, observability, idempotency, performance, security, and fault tolerance.
  • Diagnose complex production issues and lead technical efforts to restore service and prevent recurrence.
  • Mentor engineers and help them develop stronger skills in system design, problem-solving, and technical decision-making.
  • Identify reusable components, patterns, and platform capabilities that improve delivery across teams.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and help the organization adopt tools and practices that create meaningful engineering leverage.
What We're Looking For
Minimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience testing, launching, and supporting production software.
  • 3+ years of experience designing software systems and defining application or platform architecture.
  • Experience leading technically complex projects involving multiple engineers or teams.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, automated testing, and production operations.
  • Experience developing cloud-based applications in a high-availability or high-throughput environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building production services with Go.
  • Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, S3, CloudFront, EventBridge, Step Functions, and Secrets Manager.
  • Experience with serverless and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Temporal, MongoDB, Snowflake, or Bazel.
  • Experience in healthcare, fintech, payments, claims processing, or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with payment rails such as ACH, wires, checks, or virtual cards.
  • Experience leading architecture reviews or setting technical standards across multiple teams.
  • Experience using AI-assisted or agentic development tools to improve software delivery.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Staff Software Engineer at Nomi Health does more than deliver individual features. You establish technical clarity, help teams make better decisions, reduce operational risk, and leave behind systems and engineering practices that make future work easier.
Nomi Health delivers disruptive healthcare solutions, in partnership with like-minded employers, public sector organizations, advisors (brokers/consultants), and payers/TPAs. We're a team of 300+ people who show up every day with the same mindset: don't settle for "that's just how it is." Real change happens when you challenge the system, cut through the excuses, and build something better together.
