Internship Financial Modeling information

What is an internship in financial modeling?

An Internship in Financial Modeling is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where individuals learn and apply skills related to building financial models. These models are used to analyze financial statements, forecast company performance, evaluate investments, or support business decisions. Interns typically use tools like Excel or specialized software to create spreadsheets, perform data analysis, and generate reports under the supervision of experienced professionals. This internship provides hands-on experience in finance, accounting, and analytical thinking, which are valuable for future careers in investment banking, corporate finance, or consulting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship in financial modeling?

To thrive in a Financial Modeling Internship, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in mathematics, and a background in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, financial modeling software, and possibly Bloomberg Terminal or similar platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you interpret data and present insights clearly. These skills are essential for producing accurate financial models that inform investment decisions and strategic planning.

What are some common challenges faced during a financial modeling internship, and how can I overcome them?

Interns in Financial Modeling often encounter challenges such as working with large, complex data sets and learning new software or modeling techniques quickly. Balancing accuracy with tight deadlines can also be demanding. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to proactively seek feedback, make use of available resources (like model templates or online tutorials), and communicate regularly with your team to clarify expectations. Embracing a detail-oriented mindset and practicing good version control will help you deliver reliable results and build confidence in your work.

Job description

Overview

For US Applicants: For U.S. applicants, please submit your application through our online portal by our deadline: September 13, 2026 for consideration.

The Analyst Role

As an Analyst, you will play an important role at Cornerstone Research. You will join the firm as a generalist, providing you the opportunity to work on projects (cases) that span multiple practice areas, including finance, antitrust, intellectual property, consumer fraud and product liability, accounting, and more. Our case teams range in size and typically include an academic or industry testifying expert, senior consultants, and other Analysts. Within a case team, you will make important contributions during all phases of a project-from developing case strategy to conducting complex analyses to preparing experts for testimony. Every case presents a new analytical challenge.

What does case work at Cornerstone Research look like?

Collaboration is central to our work. Our Analysts do not travel to work onsite with clients; almost all work is performed out of our local offices or remotely. This means that you will be working alongside your peers regularly, even if you are not working on the same cases. When it comes to casework, you can expect the following:

  • You will typically work on multiple cases simultaneously. This is to provide you with ample opportunity to develop your skillset and determine the type of work you enjoy.
  • Most cases have quantitative and qualitative elements, though some will be more quantitative and others more qualitative.
  • Each Cornerstone Research office has a Staffing & Development Manager, a dedicated professional who oversees your case assignments with an eye toward your professional development goals.
  • You will have opportunities to interact with senior consultants, academic and industry experts, attorneys, and clients.
  • Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Developing financial and economic models;
  • Analyzing large datasets;
  • Examining market and industry behavior;
  • Conducting research via academic articles and relevant industry literature;
  • Assisting with expert written reports;
  • Presenting findings to colleagues, experts, and clients.

Analyst Development

From day one, there is a strong emphasis on equipping you with the information, training, and resources to help you succeed. Your time at the firm will begin with a comprehensive orientation and training program to introduce you to the firm and help you get integrated. Additionally, we host continuous learning and development programs through which you will learn sophisticated analytical and statistical techniques used in your day-to-day casework, as well as soft skills that will help you successfully work with case teams, clients and their counsel, and experts.

The firm offers many opportunities for Analysts to participate in, and often take a leadership role over, firm initiatives outside of casework. From social committees and affinity groups to volunteer programs and recruiting, there's something for everyone.

Your experience as an Analyst will be well-rounded.

Long-Term Growth

We value the long-term professional growth of our Analysts. The analytical depth of our assignments and breadth of industry exposure serves as outstanding preparation for the next stages in an individual's career, including graduate school. In addition to the experience casework provides, we offer multiple resources for those applying to top graduate programs in business, economics, and law. Many Analysts also choose to stay at Cornerstone Research and continue their careers with the firm - a number of our senior consultants, including Partners, started their careers as Analysts. In addition, top-performing Analysts are eligible for graduate school financial support and an offer to return to the firm after the completion of their graduate program.

Qualifications

If the Analyst role sounds exciting to you, we strongly encourage you to apply. We seek well-rounded, enthusiastic individuals for our Analyst role. Our qualifications are as follows:

  • In your senior year of an undergraduate degree or completing your Master's; with an expected graduation date of December 2026 - July 2027.
  • Demonstrated strong academic performance; successful applicants typically have a GPA higher than a 3.6.
  • Strong analytical background, through academics or internships.
  • Interest in business and economics.
  • We prefer students who have completed at least one internship in business, economics, data analysis, or similarly relevant work.

Cornerstone Research will provide H-1B, H-1B1, E3 and TN visa support to full-time candidates that require visa support. Full-time candidates requiring visa support, must have a STEM-eligible degree and at least 36 months remaining of work authorization.

Cornerstone Research offers a market-leading compensation and benefits package. The base salary for the Analyst role is $112,500. In addition to the base salary, new Analysts will be eligible for a starting bonus. Analysts are also eligible for discretionary bonuses based on case performance, firm contributions, and other factors. Previous relevant work experience will be taken into consideration in determining compensation. Information about our benefits, including health and wellness and family support, can be found on the Careers page of our website.
