Internship Financial Modeling information

What is an internship in financial modeling?

An Internship in Financial Modeling is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where individuals learn and apply skills related to building financial models. These models are used to analyze financial statements, forecast company performance, evaluate investments, or support business decisions. Interns typically use tools like Excel or specialized software to create spreadsheets, perform data analysis, and generate reports under the supervision of experienced professionals. This internship provides hands-on experience in finance, accounting, and analytical thinking, which are valuable for future careers in investment banking, corporate finance, or consulting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship in financial modeling?

To thrive in a Financial Modeling Internship, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in mathematics, and a background in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, financial modeling software, and possibly Bloomberg Terminal or similar platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you interpret data and present insights clearly. These skills are essential for producing accurate financial models that inform investment decisions and strategic planning.

What are some common challenges faced during a financial modeling internship, and how can I overcome them?

Interns in Financial Modeling often encounter challenges such as working with large, complex data sets and learning new software or modeling techniques quickly. Balancing accuracy with tight deadlines can also be demanding. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to proactively seek feedback, make use of available resources (like model templates or online tutorials), and communicate regularly with your team to clarify expectations. Embracing a detail-oriented mindset and practicing good version control will help you deliver reliable results and build confidence in your work.

Job description

Project Intern – Fall 2026 (Part-Time)

We are seeking a part-time Project Intern to join our Atlanta team for the Fall 2026 semester. This opportunity is designed for students who want to gain meaningful, hands-on experience while continuing their academic studies. B&D leads the planning, development, and management of the places that shape and strengthen our communities. Interns at B&D are active contributors to real client engagements—not observers—working alongside experienced advisors on projects at the intersection of real estate, planning, finance, and strategy.

If you're intellectually curious, enjoy solving complex problems, and want to make a meaningful impact while building your professional experience, we'd love to hear from you.

The Opportunity

As a Project Intern, you will play a dynamic role on project teams by supporting research, data analytics, synthesis, and project delivery across a range of client engagements. You'll collaborate closely with experienced professionals and contribute meaningfully to real-world projects while developing the analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills essential to advisory work.

How You'll Contribute
  • Perform data collection and analysis to support client engagements, including:
    • Market and industry research
    • Focus group facilitation and reporting
    • In-person and telephone interviews
    • Survey design and analysis
    • Space planning support
    • Financial modeling and quantitative analysis
    • Internet and secondary research
  • Synthesize and translate complex information into clear, actionable insights that equip clients to make effective decisions.
  • Develop accurate, well-organized presentation materials, financial models, and other project deliverables that support the team's storytelling and recommendation development.
  • Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support critical thinking, analysis, and the development of recommendations.
  • Support quality control and client satisfaction efforts specific to assigned projects.
  • Contribute to the firm's research and development efforts by identifying new analytical tools, strengthening existing models, and exploring improved ways of working.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing thoughtfully and proactively to team and firm success.
What We're Looking For
  • Current undergraduate (junior or senior preferred) or graduate student pursuing a degree in real estate, urban planning, architecture, business, finance, construction management, economics, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • Directly related work or internship experience in real estate, urban planning, economic development, finance, or construction is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly and professionally.
  • Highly motivated and able to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Resourceful in gathering, organizing, and evaluating data and information.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with real estate, finance, and basic accounting principles.
  • Proven adaptability, flexibility, creativity, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively within a team.
  • Reliable transportation and the ability to work part-time from our Atlanta office throughout the fall semester.
  • Clear alignment with and support for the firm's mission, values, and operating philosophy.
Why People Choose B&D
  • Impactful Mission – Be part of meaningful work that helps shape the places where people live, learn, work, and connect.
  • Learning & Growth – Gain hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development while working alongside industry experts.
  • Strong Culture – Entrepreneurial thinking, collaboration, intellectual curiosity, integrity, and excellence drive how we work together.
  • Meaningful Experience – Interns contribute to real client work, develop valuable skills, and make an impact from day one.

To get started, our application process includes a resume, an optional (recommended) cover letter, and a short set of essential questions. We look forward to learning more about you and how you can contribute to our team.
