The Systems Engineer IV - Test leads and executes integration and testing activities for rocket motor systems, overseeing complex test campaigns that involve multiple subsystems, high-risk operations and detailed coordination with internal and external stakeholders. This role also serves as a primary technical interface to customers, providing status updates, risk assessments and test results. The Level IV Test Engineer mentors and leads junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement. The role also applies systems engineering principles to ensure alignment of test activities with program requirements and overall system performance.
This position reports to the Systems Engineering Manager and is part of our Strategic Systems Department. This role can be based in either Reno, NV or Folsom, CA.
In this role, the essential functions are:
  • Lead integration and test activities for rocket motor systems, including preparation, execution and post-test analysis.
  • Develop, maintain and standardize test plans, procedures and data collection strategies to ensure consistency and best practices across the test organization.
  • Oversee test software and hardware development for SWIL (Software-in-the-Loop) and HWIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) testing.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and team members.
  • Communicate test results, status and issues effectively to management, customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and engineering standards during all test activities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in test processes, tools and methodologies to enhance efficiency, repeatability and reliability.
  • Lead TRRs (Test Readiness Reviews) and other technical reviews.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues and lead resolution of test anomalies.
  • Apply controls and systems engineering principles to ensure test systems and instrumentation operate effectively and align with overall system requirements.

Requirements Include:
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related STEM field from an accredited college/university.
  • Seven (7) to Ten (10) years of hands-on experience in test engineering within propulsion systems, aerospace or related industries; hands-on experience with rocket motor integration and testing.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills; ability to guide and influence engineers across multiple teams, lead complex projects and technical discussions and make high-impact decisions.
  • Proven track record of driving results in high-pressure test environments.
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities; capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Dedication to quality, safety, accountability and mission-focused teamwork in national defense applications.
  • Extensive experience with integration and testing of complex hardware and software systems.
  • Advanced programming proficiency in C/C++, MATLAB, Python and Simulink, including developing, debugging and optimizing test software.
  • Strong working knowledge and practical experience with serial communication protocols (RS-422, RS-485, CAN) used to support integration, troubleshooting and coordination of test systems.
  • Strong knowledge of MIL-STD and aerospace qualification/acceptance test practices, with the ability to apply and guide their use in complex test campaigns.
  • Strong background in DAQ (Data Acquisition) systems, instrumentation and controls engineering principles as applied to test systems and integration.
  • Experience with test software development, automation and high-fidelity simulation tools.
  • Intimate knowledge of instrumentation, calibration standards and methodologies.
  • Proven expertise in troubleshooting and test issue resolution.
  • Expertise in test planning, execution and data analysis.

Travel, Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements:
  • Willingness to travel to test facilities and support rocket motor test operations as required.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government Clearance.

The good faith base salary range for this role is $119,415 - $173,700 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future. This position is incentive plan eligible.
