Overview / Responsibilities

Wood currently has an exciting opportunity for an Intermediate Designer, Substations Electrical. Reporting to the Stations Electrical Engineering Manager, this position is located in our Vancouver, B.C. office. This role involves the design of high voltage substation projects from conception to construction. Key Responsibilities:

  • Design of 12 kV to 500 kV electrical substations including all deliverables for substation layouts and station services
  • Develop one-line & phasing diagrams, layout plans, sections, ground grid layouts, grounding details, conduit & cable routing plans, and details
  • Prepare and review drawing lists, engineering documents, specifications and inspection, and testing plans/procedures
  • Write and plan project scope(s), staging plans, test plans, proposals, estimates, schedules, and budgets
  • Prepare material take-offs for all electrical equipment, as well as ordering materials through the procurement group
  • Enhance and maintain relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients
  • Ensuring the latest safe practices and methods are integrated into the design
  • Working within assigned budgets and schedules
  • Supporting documentation creation process for projects including drawings, technical specifications, tender documents, technical reports, and project calculations while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and quality
  • Responding to information requests from site and completing project documentation including record drawing packages, calculations, and return of data to the client
  • Efficiently and effectively handling multiple tasks independently and as a part of a team
  • Co-ordinating, maintaining, and enhancing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and assisting team leads and managers
Skills / Qualifications
  • A diploma from a recognized Electrical technology program or equivalent
  • 3+ years of substation design experience (12-500 kV) serving BC Hydro and/ or other utilities in North America
  • Experience with typical project types such as Circuit Breaker, Disconnect Switch, CVT, Surge Arrester, or Power Transformer Replacement
  • Proficiency in the operation of drafting software, such as AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation is essential
  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code and electrical design principles
  • Knowledge of Engineering/Design Standards and Codes are an asset
  • Must be able to interpret engineers' notes and convert them into detailed design drawings accurately and in a timely manner with a minimum amount of supervision
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage time effectively between multiple projects
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Able to exercise initiative when resolving issues and in adapting and applying procedures to address unusual situations
