What is an internship in feature film development?

An Internship in Feature Film Development is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the early stages of creating a movie. Interns typically assist with tasks such as script coverage, researching projects, organizing meetings, and helping the development team evaluate potential film ideas. This role offers insight into how films are chosen, shaped, and prepared for production, providing valuable exposure to the creative and business sides of the film industry. It is an excellent opportunity for those interested in learning about film production from the ground up.

What types of tasks and projects can I expect to work on during an internship in feature film development?

As an intern in feature film development, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support the creative and logistical aspects of the filmmaking process. Typical responsibilities include reading and analyzing scripts, providing coverage and feedback, conducting research on potential projects or industry trends, and assisting with administrative duties such as organizing meetings and tracking submissions. You may also have opportunities to participate in brainstorming sessions, observe pitch meetings, and collaborate with creative executives, giving you valuable insight into how films move from concept to production. This hands-on experience is ideal for those looking to build a foundation in the film industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in feature film development?

To thrive as an intern in feature film development, you need a strong understanding of film narrative, script analysis, and industry trends, often supported by coursework or experience in film studies or related fields. Familiarity with script coverage formats, industry databases, and tools like Final Draft or Microsoft Office is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively supporting development teams, identifying promising projects, and contributing creative insights in a highly competitive industry.
