Internship Engineering Student information

What does an internship engineering student do?

An internship engineering student typically assists professional engineers with various tasks, such as conducting research, analyzing data, preparing reports, and helping with project design or testing. Interns gain hands-on experience by working on real engineering projects, learning to use industry tools and software, and participating in team meetings. The role is designed to help students apply their classroom knowledge to practical situations, develop new technical skills, and build professional connections within the engineering field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship engineering student?

To thrive as an Internship Engineering Student, you need foundational knowledge in engineering principles, strong analytical skills, and enrollment in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, MATLAB, or industry-specific engineering platforms is often required. Effective communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork help set top candidates apart. These skills ensure you can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt quickly, and maximize the learning experience during the internship.

What types of projects can an internship engineering student expect to work on, and how much guidance is typically provided?

As an internship engineering student, you are often assigned to support ongoing projects, such as assisting with design work, conducting tests, or analyzing data under the supervision of experienced engineers. Interns usually start with smaller tasks to build their confidence and understanding but may take on more responsibility as they demonstrate competence. Most companies provide structured mentorship, regular check-ins, and hands-on guidance to ensure your learning and integration into the team. Collaboration with other interns and professionals is common, offering valuable networking and team-building experience.

Job description

About the Role

Walter P Moore is seeking engineering interns and coop students to join our Structural Engineering team in Toronto. This role is intended for students who have recently completed or currently completing their undergraduate degree who are looking for handson, practical experience working on real structural engineering projects.

As part of a project team, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to the analysis, modeling, and design of architectural structures across a wide range of building types, including commercial, institutional, healthcare, sports, and public assembly facilities. Interns and coop students are also eligible to participate in Walter P Moore’s internal training and professional development programs.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist with structural analysis, design calculations, and construction document creation under the guidance of professional engineers
  • Develop and review structural models and drawings using industry software (e.g., Revit and structural analysis tools) as well as internally developed digital and AI driven tools
  • Support project teams with technical documentation and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Participate in internal project meetings and design reviews
  • Gain exposure to realworld project delivery, from concept through construction

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Civil Engineering program (structural focus preferred)
  • Middegree students encouraged to apply, including those in formal coop programs
  • Completion of, or progression through, core structural engineering coursework
  • Strong interest in building and structural engineering
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, with flexibility to support academic requirements

Why Walter P Moore

  • Meaningful technical work — not just observation or administrative tasks
  • Direct mentorship from experienced structural engineers
  • Exposure to complex, highprofile projects across multiple building sectors
  • A collaborative, learningfocused environment that supports technical growth
  • Many interns and coop students return to Walter P Moore for future work terms or fulltime opportunities after graduation
