**This position may be filled at the II or III level depending on experience**Position Summary:This is the mid-skill craft level of the Nuclear Substation Technician hierarchy. A Nuclear Substation Technician II will assist a higher-level technician and sometimes safely lead in activities associated with nuclear substation maintenance activities. Within a highly regulated work area this position is designated to support and ensure all of Duke Energy's Nuclear facilities are reliably connected through its seven PGO nuclear switchyards. A Trans Nuc Switchyard Tech II typically operates within a geographic area supporting multiple nuclear facilities, however, will be deployed to other switchyards within other regions if workload demands. Incumbents are expected to develop technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity. In addition, fosters a culture that values self-reporting of compliance violations/errors, human performance events, continuous improvement, and consistency between each area of responsibility.
This is a technically skilled craft level and is a critical role to the reliability of nuclear facilities, which generate to the grid through Nuclear Switchyards. Within a highly regulated work area this position is designated to support and ensure all of Duke Energy's Nuclear facilities are reliably connected through its seven PGO nuclear switchyards. A Trans Nuc Switchyard Tech III typically operates within a geographic area supporting multiple nuclear facilities, however, will be deployed to other switchyards within other regions if workload demands. As a point of contact between Nuclear and PGO this employee must be capable of representing all switchyard work. In addition, fosters a culture that values self-reporting of compliance violations/errors, human performance events, continuous improvement, and consistency between each area of responsibility.
An incumbent is expected to provide coaching on safety, technical and procedural matters while functioning as a leader of NSTs performing work within Nuclear Switchyards. This position requires the employee to be well versed in both PGO and Nuclear policies/procedures and through oversight be able to ensure construction and maintenance work is being executed within the documented boundaries. Incumbents must have the skills and ability to independently lead construction and maintenance activities plus be capable of serving on committees and enhance policy/procedures. Moreover, must resolve matters associated with test equipment, switching and tagging, preventive maintenance, inspections, modifications, trouble shooting and heavy lifting.
The position will continue to develop with the execution and documentation of work to ensure regulatory compliance with OSHA, NERC, NRC, NEIL, NOS, QA, etc., including environmental regulations associated with the maintenance of PGO switchyard and associated nuclear assets. This role provides a PGO perspective for switching, scheduling, procedure use and adherence, switchyard and 24kV interface agreement. In addition, the incumbent must be adaptive to working under two training programs, work methods, and safety expectations
For Nuclear switchyards this position is expected to have knowledge of construction, maintenance and inspections that are performed by multiple disciplines of other PGO workers which includes but not limited to: Switching and tagging, grounding, equipment testing, substation DC supply including batteries and chargers, monitoring/control, AC low voltage systems, oil and gas processing, refurbishment of HV apparatus and switches, rigging/lifting, and frequent aerial work.
Nuclear generation has a significant contribution to Duke Energy, Municipalities and Electric Cooperatives within the Carolinas, therefore an incumbent must be available for outage restoration and response to failures and emergencies. The incumbent must be available24/7 for supporting system emergencies/emergent projects as they pertain to their respective nuclear switchyards and the ability to travel to other jurisdictions
Responsibilities:Demonstrate the ability to study, retain and operate following all PGO and Nuclear safety rules - 100%
Have the capacity to safely lead small risk jobs and work independent of direct leadership Substation equipment isolation and clearances plus grounding practices
Capability to follow both PGO Switching & Tagging, plus nuclear safety tagging program eSOMS.
Execute work following all PGO work methods/JPI/Procedures and Nuclear Administrative Procedures/Technical Procedures.
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of Human Performance practices, never assume and stop work during any uncertainty
Execute PGO and Nuclear processes, interface agreements, work management and scheduling systems to organize substation work activities.
Understand regulatory compliance and adheres to Duke and nuclear policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements (NRC,NERC)
Ability to responsibly operate within nuclear switchyards and plant boundaries, exercising broad knowledge of both Nuclear and PGO expectations including work activities inside SOCA and nuclear protected areas
Ability to respond to all callouts 24/7
Understand AC and DC circuit principles and reading prints.
Ability to perform assigned calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instrumentation & control systems.
Ability to perform troubleshooting efficiently and safely.
Ability to work with the Nuclear Work Control Center/Operations and the Transmission Energy Control Center/Service techs for starting and completing work activities.
Ability to perform power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, infrared scans, corona scans and other various test equipment and how to interpret results and understand the difference between nuclear and transmission criteria.
Has the ability to complete maintenance/construction activities inside the nuclear protected area and on substation equipment including but not limited to switches, circuit breakers, transformers, PT's, CT's, CCVT's, load centers, and grounding systems.
Skills and experience with laptop testing and work-related IT systems: Maximo, NAS, Tags Pro eSOMS, Nantel
Has the knowledge to perform battery inspections and minor maintenance and the NERC requirements.
Maintain compliance with all PGO training (e.g. EHS training matrix), and to specific administrative processes that require training in NGD. These administrative qualifications include but are not limited to 1) all training/testing required for nuclear access and badging, 2) both PGO and
Nuclear red tag/safety tag training-as they are two different systems, 3) Nuclear housekeeping tags, and 4) program requirements for calibrated tools used per nuclear work orders
Complete Duke Energy Switching and Tagging training and the training observations required to be qualified to perform switching and tagging on Distribution and Transmission components.
Adheres to the Nuclear Fatigue Rule work hour limits for both online and outage related activities.
Associate's in ElectromechanicalEngineering Technology or Other Related Degree
In addition to required degree, one (1) year of related work experience
In lieu of Associate's degree AND one (1) year minimum of related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 3 years minimum related work experience
Must have a valid State Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver's License

Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location
Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
