Job description

Biologist - Purification Scientist


Client: Eli Lilly and Company
Location: Boston, MA (Onsite)
Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (40 hrs/week


Position Summary

Seeking an early-career Biologist / Purification Scientist to join the Downstream Process Development team in Boston, MA. This role will support purification and characterization of viral vectors, biologics, or recombinant proteins for process development and manufacturing activities. The ideal candidate has hands-on laboratory experience with chromatography-based purification techniques and strong documentation and collaboration skills.


Key Responsibilities
  • Execute purification processes including affinity chromatography (e.g., AVB, CaptureSelect), ion-exchange chromatography (AEX, CEX), and polishing steps

  • Operate AKTA systems (Avant, Pure, Pilot) for small- to large-scale purification runs

  • Perform tangential flow filtration (TFF) for buffer exchange and product concentration

  • Prepare buffers and manage chromatography columns and consumables

  • Support experimental design, data collection, and detailed documentation in accordance with GMP/GLP practices

  • Assist with troubleshooting and optimization of purification processes

  • Analyze samples using standard analytical techniques (e.g., UV, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, ddPCR, HPLC)

  • Collaborate with upstream process, analytical, and manufacturing teams

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards


Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on purification experience in an academic or industry laboratory

  • Practical experience with ion-exchange and affinity chromatography

  • Experience with buffer preparation and basic analytical characterization methods

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent documentation practices

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project timelines

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AAV or other viral vector purification

  • Hands-on experience with AKTA systems and Unicorn software

  • Exposure to downstream process development or biomanufacturing environments
