Job description
The Veterinary Nurse is responsible for the record keeping and medical treatment of adult dogs
in for-training, puppies and breeder dogs on campus. Assistance with communications, record
keeping and medical treatment of graduate dogs, puppies in raiser homes, and breeders in host
homes.
Core Competencies: Medical Care & Recordkeeping
- Under the direction of the Campus Veterinarians and Veterinary Services Manager, provide
- medical care to adult dogs in training, puppies, breeding dogs, and graduate dogs.
- Maintenance of all medical records for all responsible dogs and performs scheduled medical
- care.
- Handle canine medical emergency situations for program dogs, while keeping the Chief Executive Officer, Campus Veterinarians, and the Director of Training informed.
- Provides on-call medical services in coordination with Campus Veterinarians.
- Monitor and respond to incoming medical incident reports and observe medical and general
- health conditions for all on campus dogs.
- Keep abreast of dogs on medical hold and monitors recovery.
- Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of the Campus Veterinarians.
- Surgical preparation and assistance.
- Inventory of all supplies and pharmaceuticals, indicates when additional supplies are needed or
- stock is low.
- Provide exceptional client service to all visiting Graduates, Puppy Raisers, Breeder Hosts, and
- other guests.
- Perform quality controls, maintenance and cleaning on in house laboratory equipment.
- Maintain medical equipment and assist Veterinary Services Manager in reaching out to vendors
- for troubleshooting and repairs.
- Serves as mentor and teacher to team members, interns, volunteers, and graduates.
- Training
- Assists in the basic veterinary education of students, puppy raisers, graduates, volunteers,
- fellow employees and interns.
Recordkeeping
- Maintenance of all medical records for all responsible dogs and performs scheduled medical care.
Transport of Animals
- On an as needed basis for more involved medical care or evaluation by specialists.

- All employees are responsible for keeping the grounds of Southeastern Guide Dogs safe and
- clean. Reporting or fixing safety hazards, picking up trash and assisting our guests and
- volunteers are required of all employees.
Demonstrated ability to perform canine health care required. Computer literacy needed. Valid driver’s license required with good driving history. Ability to effectively communicate with health care professionals and the general public required.

- Ability to remain on feet for large periods of time, and the ability to lift 70-80 lbs with a coworker required. A valid driver’s license required.
