Job description

Position Purpose

The Clinical Pharmacist II is responsible for delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care across Renown Health acute care services. This includes preparation, distribution, and safe handling of medications, clinical monitoring, and collaboration with healthcare professionals within established guidelines and statutory requirements. Additionally, this position is responsible for attending multidisciplinary meetings, serving as a formal preceptor, or providing departmental staff development opportunities.

Nature and Scope

The Clinical Pharmacist II plays a critical role in delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care within Renown Health. This position is responsible for both distributive and clinical functions, requiring a balanced approach to medication preparation, dispensing, and therapeutic oversight. The pharmacist ensures medications are handled safely, accurately, and cost-effectively, while also providing expert guidance on drug administration, therapy monitoring, and formulary management.

The scope of this role includes interpreting and verifying medication orders for appropriateness, identifying and resolving potential drug-related issues, and maintaining compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations and hospital policy. The pharmacist maintains accurate patient medication profiles and documentation, oversees controlled substance records, and ensures timely processing of patient charges.

Clinically, the pharmacist monitors drug therapy, including but not limited to, parenteral nutrition, pharmacokinetics, renal dosing, and IV-to-enteral conversions. They collaborate with providers and nursing staff to recommend appropriate therapies and initiate corrective actions when necessary. Effective communication and documentation of clinical interventions are essential components of this role.

The position also includes leadership responsibilities such as supervising pharmacy technicians and support staff, training interns and students, and contributing to departmental quality initiatives. Additionally, the pharmacist is responsible for providing hands on training to pharmacist trainees regarding daily shift responsibilities and best practices.

As a key member of the healthcare team, the Clinical Pharmacist serves as a resource to management, supports inventory control, participates in incident reporting, and actively engages in continuous improvement efforts. This position directly contributes to patient care and is integral to ensuring safe and effective medication use throughout the health system.

Clinical Pharmacist II is responsible for providing development opportunities for pharmacy staff, serving as a formally appointed preceptor to a pharmacy resident or student learning experience, or serving as a pharmacy representative in a multidisciplinary meeting.

The pharmacist is expected to demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and initiative, including the ability to work across multiple clinical areas and shifts in a 24/7 operational environment. Overtime may be required.

The pharmacist is expected to regularly attend staff, workgroup, and educational meetings .

The incumbent may perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Completion of Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an ACPE accredited pharmacy program or 10 years of experience in acute care pharmacy is required. Completion of a Pharmacy Residency or equivalent training program in clinical pharmacy is preferred.

Experience:

Applicants are required to have 3 years of hospital pharmacy experience or completion of a Pharmacy Residency Program.

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Pharmacist license (status Active or Temporary) required at time of hire.

Certification(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain one of the following nationally recognized forms of advanced credentialing or board certification: Critical Care Pharmacy (BCCCP), Emergency Medicine Pharmacy (BCEMP), Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP), Pediatric Pharmacy (BCPPS), Pharmacotherapy (BCPS), or an equivalent nationally recognized advanced credential or board certification as approved by Pharmacy leadership, required at time of hire.

Ability to obtain and maintain Healthcare Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within the first 90 days of employment is required for all locations.

Ability to obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within the first 90 days of employment is required for departments 200211, 200212, 200234, 200237, 200321, and 400211.

Ability to obtain and maintain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required for Pediatric, Critical Care, or Emergency Medicine shifts.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc. Type 25 WPM.
