What is an internship digital signal processing engineer?

Internship digital signal processing (DSP) engineers are students or recent graduates who work under supervision to assist with the design, analysis, and implementation of systems that process digital signals such as audio, video, or sensor data. They typically support teams by developing algorithms, writing code (often in languages like MATLAB, Python, or C), and testing DSP applications in real-world scenarios. These internships provide hands-on experience in applying theoretical concepts from coursework to practical engineering problems, often in industries like telecommunications, audio technology, or medical devices.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an internship digital signal processing engineer?

As an Internship Digital Signal Processing Engineer, you will likely work on tasks such as developing and testing algorithms for signal processing, analyzing real-world data, and assisting with the implementation of DSP solutions in hardware or software. Interns often collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support ongoing projects, troubleshoot issues, and document their findings. This role provides hands-on experience with tools like MATLAB, Python, or C++, and gives exposure to industry-standard practices, offering a valuable foundation for future career growth in DSP and related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship digital signal processing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Digital Signal Processing Engineer, a solid background in electrical engineering, mathematics (especially linear algebra and calculus), and signal processing fundamentals is crucial, often supported by relevant coursework or a related degree. Familiarity with programming languages like MATLAB or Python, and tools such as Simulink or LabVIEW, is frequently required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns contribute meaningfully to projects. These skills and qualities are essential for developing, analyzing, and optimizing digital signal processing algorithms in collaborative engineering environments.

What is the difference between Internship Digital Signal Processing Engineer vs Digital Signal Processing Engineer?

Job description

Your Job
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Signal Integrity (SI) Engineer to lead the measurement, analysis, and validation of high-speed digital and RF interconnects, including connectors, cable assemblies, and related interconnect systems.
This role is critical to advancing the standardization of global SI laboratories and ensuring optimal signal integrity and shielding performance across a broad range of Molex products and applications. Responsibilities include evaluating and characterizing connectors, cable assemblies, and interconnect systems, with a focus on component performance, mated-interface performance, assembly characterization, shielding effectiveness, and the correlation of measured results with customer, regulatory, and industry requirements.
Reporting to the Senior Principal Signal Integrity Engineer, you will operate with a high degree of autonomy, driving signal integrity test development, mentoring laboratory engineers and technicians, and contributing to global engineering initiatives. You will play a key role in prototype validation, test methodology development, and the continuous enhancement of laboratory capabilities.
What You Will Do
  • Perform high-speed electrical measurements, including insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, mode conversion, characteristic impedance, skew, propagation delay, eye diagrams, BER, and shielding leakage using VNAs, TDR/TDT systems, high-speed oscilloscopes, and BERTs.
  • Evaluate the signal integrity and shielding effectiveness of connectors, cable assemblies, interconnect systems, and communication channels for new product development and manufacturing validation.
  • Support product development through electromagnetic simulation and modeling to predict signal integrity and shielding performance.
  • Analyze and interpret S-parameters, TDR/TDT waveforms, shielding measurements, and time- and frequency-domain responses.
  • Develop, validate, and execute signal integrity and shielding test methodologies aligned with industry standards, customer requirements, and regulatory specifications.
  • Design, implement, and maintain test automation solutions using Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages.
  • Analyze test data to identify design improvements and optimize product performance.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts and root-cause analyses of signal integrity- and shielding-related issues.
  • Collaborate with design, simulation, and system engineering teams to optimize overall product performance.
  • Perform channel characterization and link analysis for high-speed SerDes systems.
  • Validate product performance against specifications across a wide range of high-speed signaling technologies.
  • Stay current with industry advancements and emerging technologies while leading internal signal integrity technology development initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians, promoting laboratory best practices and technical excellence throughout the organization.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in high-speed signal integrity design, testing, and validation.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, characterizing, and evaluating high-speed connectors, cable assemblies, and interconnect systems.
  • Strong foundation in electromagnetic field theory, microwave engineering, transmission line theory, shielding concepts, and high-speed interconnect behavior.
  • Extensive experience performing signal integrity testing, shielding testing, and characterization of high-speed connectors, cable assemblies, and interconnect systems using TDR/TDT, VNA, oscilloscope, and BERT measurement techniques.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with extensive hands-on laboratory experience in measurement-driven engineering environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical projects, mentoring engineers and technicians, establishing laboratory best practices, and contributing to technology roadmaps.

What Will Put You Ahead
  • Working knowledge of Power Integrity (PI) and EMI/EMC principles.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation and modeling to predict signal integrity and shielding performance.
  • Understanding of SerDes architectures, channel characterization techniques, equalization concepts, and high-speed link analysis.
  • Experience with test automation, scripting, and data management systems.
  • Experience with fixture removal and de-embedding techniques using SI data analysis tools and Touchstone (SnP) data formats.
  • Experience designing high-speed test fixtures and test boards.
  • Familiarity with high-speed modulation formats, including PAM4, PAM6, and PAM8.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards and specifications, including USCAR, Open Alliance, PCIe, Ethernet, USB, DDR, IEC, EIA, and CXL.
  • Ability to translate complex technical data into clear, actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and technical excellence.
