Internship Data Visualization information

What types of projects and tools can I expect to work with during a Data Visualization Internship?

As a Data Visualization intern, you will typically collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders to create visual representations of complex datasets. You can expect to work on projects such as interactive dashboards, infographics, and reports using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or open-source libraries such as D3.js and Plotly. Interns often assist in cleaning and preparing data, designing visual layouts, and presenting findings to team members. This role offers valuable exposure to both technical and creative aspects of data storytelling, and provides a strong foundation for future roles in data analytics or visualization.

What are internship data visualization roles?

Internship data visualization roles are entry-level positions where interns learn to create visual representations of data to help organizations make data-driven decisions. These roles typically involve working with tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Python libraries to turn raw data into charts, graphs, and dashboards. Interns gain hands-on experience by assisting with data cleaning, analysis, and reporting tasks, while learning best practices in presenting complex information clearly and effectively. These internships are a great way for students and recent graduates to develop technical and analytical skills in a real-world setting.

What is the difference between Internship Data Visualization vs Data Analyst Intern?

AspectInternship Data VisualizationData Analyst Intern
Required SkillsData visualization tools, basic analytics, programming (e.g., Excel, Tableau, Power BI)Data analysis, statistical skills, programming (e.g., SQL, Python), visualization
Work EnvironmentProject-based, collaborative teams, entry-levelData-focused projects, cross-departmental collaboration, entry-level
Industry UsageMarketing, finance, tech, researchBusiness, finance, healthcare, tech

Internship Data Visualization focuses on creating visual representations of data to communicate insights, often using tools like Tableau or Power BI. Data Analyst Interns perform broader data analysis, including statistical evaluation and data cleaning. Both roles are entry-level, require basic technical skills, and are used across various industries. The main difference lies in the emphasis: visualization versus comprehensive data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Data Visualization, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Data Visualization, you need a solid understanding of data analysis, basic statistics, and proficiency with visualization concepts, often supported by coursework in computer science, statistics, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Excel, or programming languages like Python (with libraries such as Matplotlib or Seaborn) is typically expected. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help interns present data insights clearly to diverse audiences. These skills ensure that data-driven stories are accurately and compellingly conveyed to support decision-making.

Job description

Join the leader in entertainment innovation and help us design the future. Theย Advanced Technology Groupย (ATG) is the research division of the company. ATG's mission is to look ahead, deliver insights, and innovate technological solutions that will fuel Dolby's continued growth. As a valued member of the Dolby team,ย you'llย see and hear the results of your work everywhere, from movie theaters to smartphones. We continuously push the boundaries ofย audio,ย imaging, andย cloudย technology to create spectacular entertainment experiences.ย ย

As a diverse and dynamic group, our ATG researchers work on cutting-edge projects related to computer science and electrical engineering for audio, video, and cloud technologies, exploring exciting domains such as AI/ML, algorithms, digital signal processing, audio processing, image processing, computer vision, AR/VR, data science & analytics, distributed systems, cloud, edge & mobile computing, computer networking, and IoT.ย

About the Roleย

Theย Data Platform & AI Servicesย research team within Dolby's Advanced Technology Group focuses on advancing our AI and data platforms to enable AI-based innovation and deliver cloud and network-delivered media experiences to power the world's most influential media service providers.ย

We are looking for aย PhD Research Intern in ML Data Platform & Visualizationย to extend our existing data platform with scalable tooling that helps ML researchers understand, navigate, and extract insight from large-scale multimodal datasets. You will build on a production-grade platform while drawing on and contributing to emerging research in visualization for machine learning, data-centric AI, and foundation model interpretability.ย

As a Research Intern, you will:ย

  • Extend our ML data platformย to improve dataset management, discoverability, and quality assessment for large-scale, multimodal media datasets (video, image, audio, sensor data)ย

  • Build scalable visualization toolingย that enables ML researchers to explore embedding spaces, surface semantic representations from foundation models, and understand dataset structure at scaleย

  • Design and implement interactive data exploration interfacesย to support ML research workflows and data management, including ingestion, indexing, retrieval,ย annotationย and representationย

  • Investigate and apply emerging researchย in visualization for ML, data-centric AI, and foundation model representations to inform platform design decisionsย

  • Collaborate directly withย AIย researchersย to translate research workflows into platform requirements,ย bridging the gap between model development needs and data infrastructure capabilitiesย

  • Present your workย to internal stakeholders, with the possibility of contributing to academic publications or conference presentationsย

The role will be based out of our research facility inย Atlanta, GA, and offers the opportunity to work withย state-of-the-artย computing resources and proprietary datasets.ย

Requirementsย

Candidates should meet one or more of the following:ย

  • Currently enrolled in aย PhD program in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Computational Media, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with interest in data management, data visualization, ML infrastructure, or media data systemsย

  • Strong background inย data management and visualization, including data modeling, indexing, retrieval,ย annotationย and visualization for large-scale or unstructured media dataย

  • Familiarity withย ML workflows and researcher toolingย - understanding how ML researchers interact with datasets during training, evaluation, and debuggingย

  • Solid understanding of deep learning fundamentals and experience with frameworks such asย PyTorchย

  • Proficiencyย inย Pythonย and experience with visualization librariesย

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, cross-disciplinary research teamย

Highly Desired Experienceย

  • First-authored publication or project work in relevant domains at top venues such asย IEEE VIS, CHI, VLDB, ACM SIGMOD, SIGKDD,ย orย IEEE Big Dataย

  • Expertiseย inย visualization research for ML, including dataset cartography, latent space visualization, data-centric AI, or interactive ML toolsย

  • Hands-on experience building data visualization tools or interactive ML exploration interfacesย - embedding viewers, dataset dashboards, annotation UIs, or similarย

  • Experience with scalable data processing and model trainingย ย

We will review applications on a rolling basis. For the best chance to have your resume reviewed and considered, we recommend submitting your application byย June 26, 2026.ย ย ย ย ย

Eligibilityย

Currently enrolled in Doctoral program. Recentย gradsย who are within 6 months of graduation are also eligible to apply. Must be available toย work full-time Monday - Friday forย 12 weeksย between September 2026 - December 2026.ย
