What is an internship data science physics?

Internship Data Science Physics positions are temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates with a background in physics who are interested in applying data science techniques to solve scientific and analytical problems. These internships typically involve working with large datasets, performing statistical analyses, building models, and interpreting results within a physics-related context. Interns gain hands-on experience with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning tools, and data visualization methods, often contributing to research or product development teams. These roles help bridge academic knowledge in physics with practical data science skills, preparing interns for careers in research, technology, or industry.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship data science physics?

As a Data Science Physics intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve analyzing large datasets derived from physical experiments or simulations, developing predictive models, and visualizing complex phenomena. Typical tasks might include cleaning and preprocessing data, applying statistical or machine learning techniques, and collaborating with researchers to interpret results. You may also assist in automating data workflows or contributing to scientific publications, providing a dynamic and collaborative environment that bridges data science and physics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship data science physics, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Data Science Physics, you need a solid grounding in physics, mathematics, and programming, typically supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience using statistical or machine learning libraries are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help interns stand out in team-based research environments. These competencies ensure you can effectively analyze complex data, contribute to scientific discoveries, and present insights clearly.

What is the difference between Internship Data Science Physics vs Data Analyst Intern?

Job description

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We're looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.
About the Role
Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to support the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) Directorate of Logistics (CCJ4) at MacDill AFB. In this role, you will play a critical part in accelerating AI-enabled capabilities for the Joint Logistics Enterprise. You will help modernize the Joint Logistics Common Operating Picture (JLOGCOP) by integrating AI/ML capabilities into dozens of automated and manual DoD data feeds. Your work will directly increase the speed of planning and enhance decision-making for missions that promote regional cooperation and deter aggression across the USCENTCOM area of responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate regularly with client leadership regarding enterprise values, project direction, and mission objectives.
  • Identify the intersection between strategic business value, simulation-based forecasting, and achievable technical work within the logistics domain.
  • Articulate and translate complex business questions into technical solutions using available DoD data sources and mission-level modeling outputs.
  • Explore and analyze diverse datasets-including live telemetry and simulated environments-to identify meaningful entities, relationships, and trends.
  • Design and implement robust data ingestion and cleaning pipelines to ensure high-quality inputs for AI/ML models and stochastic simulations.
  • Develop applications, simulation dashboards, and effective data visualizations to communicate complex insights and scenario outcomes to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical ambassador for executive DoD leadership to sponsor and grow data literacy and modeling proficiency across the enterprise.

Required Experience/Clearance
  • An active Secret security clearance is required (TS/SCI eligibility preferred).
  • 8+ years of professional experience in data science, analytics, or Operations Research.
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM field).
  • Proficiency in functional programming languages such as Python, R, or Scala.
  • Strong experience with Modeling & Simulation (M&S) frameworks (e.g., AFSIM, EADSIM, STORM, or similar mission-level tools).
  • Strong experience with database languages, specifically SQL.
  • Demonstrated ability to discern and apply appropriate statistical and probabilistic modeling approaches for different mission contexts.
  • Proven experience communicating key findings through technical visualizations, simulated course-of-action briefings, and technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently to recommend solutions while collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as required by the mission.

Desired Experience
  • Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.).
  • Experience integrating simulation data into enterprise-level platforms (e.g., Advana, MAVEN, or C2IE).
  • Experience developing within cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GovCloud).
  • Experience with large-scale data processing tools and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Databricks).
  • Advanced experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, or R/Shiny).
  • Familiarity with DoD logistics data, USCENTCOM mission sets, and Joint Staff modeling requirements.

The salary range provided for this position represents the anticipated base salary for successful candidates. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience, education, certifications, skills, security clearance level, geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, eligible employees may participate in Redhorse's comprehensive benefits programs and may be eligible for performance-based or other incentive compensation, where applicable.
