Internship Data Engineer Intern information

What does a data engineer intern do?

A Data Engineer Intern assists in designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure needed to collect, store, and analyze data. They typically work with large datasets, helping to ensure data is clean, well-organized, and accessible for analytics or business needs. Interns often collaborate with data scientists and software engineers, learning key skills such as data modeling, ETL (extract, transform, load) processes, and using tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms. The role provides hands-on experience in building data pipelines and understanding how data drives decision-making in organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer intern?

To thrive as an Internship Data Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of data structures, SQL, and programming languages like Python or Java, often supported by coursework or projects in computer science or data engineering. Familiarity with ETL tools, cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and data visualization software is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and learn quickly. These competencies ensure interns can contribute to data projects, adapt to new technologies, and support data-driven decision-making.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as a data engineer intern?

As a Data Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on projects involving the development, testing, and maintenance of data pipelines and databases. You'll likely use technologies such as SQL, Python, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, depending on the company's stack. Interns often assist with data cleaning, integration, and transforming raw data into usable formats for analytics teams. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and senior engineers is common, providing valuable exposure to real-world workflows and teamwork in a data-driven environment.

What is the difference between Internship Data Engineer Intern vs Data Engineer?

AspectInternship Data Engineer InternData Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of a related degree (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science)Bachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field; often requires experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, supervised, part-time or full-time during studiesFull-time professional role, often in a team managing data pipelines and infrastructure
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by tech companies, startups, and organizations offering training opportunitiesUsed across industries like tech, finance, healthcare, and more for data management and analytics

The Internship Data Engineer Intern position is an entry-level, temporary role designed for students or recent graduates gaining hands-on experience. In contrast, a Data Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for building and maintaining data systems. The internship provides foundational exposure, while the Data Engineer role involves ongoing, complex data infrastructure work.

How to get a data engineer internship?

To secure a data engineer internship, candidates should develop skills in programming languages like Python or Java, gain experience with databases and cloud platforms, and build a portfolio of relevant projects. Applying through company career portals, networking, and obtaining certifications such as Google Cloud or AWS can improve chances. Internships often require a current student status or recent graduation and may involve technical assessments or interviews.

Job description

Hexagon Autonomous Solutions is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our GNSS positioning hardware team for a 1-year period from May 3, 2027 to May 2, 2028. This role emphasizes mechanical design, enclosure development, design verification, and hands-on hardware validation supporting the innovation of precision positioning technologies.

You will gain practical experience designing and validating GNSS products, antennas, and ruggedized electronics enclosures using modern CAD tools and environmental test equipment. The role includes exposure to the full product development cycle, from concept and prototype development through qualification testing and manufacturing release.

Location: Calgary, AB (onsite)

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, your contributions will include:

  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Design GNSS product enclosures, antenna housings, seals, gaskets, mounting systems, and test fixtures.
  • Support PCB integration and packaging while considering antenna performance, EMI, and EMC requirements.
  • Create manufacturing drawings including GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Build, assemble, and evaluate prototypes for fit, function, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and execute design verification (DVT) test specifications plans and procedures.
  • Support environmental testing including Sine Sweep, Random Vibration, HALT, thermal cycling, ingress protection, and leak testing.
  • Analyze test results, troubleshoot failures, and participate in root-cause investigations.
  • Participate in Design FMEA (DFMEA) activities to improve product robustness and reliability.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams on materials, processes, tooling, and product quality.
  • Contribute to design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives for mechanical design and testing processes.

Must-Have:

  • Registered in an Engineering Internship/Co-op program (Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, or related discipline) and completed at least 2nd or 3rd year of studies by the start of the work term.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor, or similar.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written).
  • Available for a 12-month, full-time (37.5 h/week) internship in Calgary, AB.
Nice-to-Have:
  • Interest in mechanical product design, electronics packaging, or precision positioning technologies.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, engineering drawings, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with enclosure design, sealing methods, and leak prevention techniques.
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification testing including vibration, shock, HALT, thermal cycling, and ingress protection testing.
  • Understanding of DFMEA, root-cause analysis, and reliability engineering concepts.
  • Experience integrating PCBs and electronic assemblies into mechanical designs.
  • Awareness of EMI/EMC requirements and how mechanical design impacts GNSS antenna performance.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, machining, or 3D printing.
Key Success Factors:
  • Strong attention to detail and a "first-time right" mindset.
  • Comfortable working independently and within a collaborative team.
  • Motivated by challenging technical work with a focus on quality and precision.
  • Able to follow complex instructions while knowing when to ask for help.
