Job description

Eaton's Distributed IT division is currently seeking a Design Engineer to join our team in Worcester, MA.
The Product Design Engineer - Product Development supports the design, development, testing, and continuous improvement of modular Data Center Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) systems and related product platforms. This role contributes to creating solutions that meet customer requirements for performance, cost, thermal effectiveness, safety, manufacturability, and ease of installation.
The Product Design Engineer works closely with Product Management, Sales, Application Engineering, Manufacturing, Field Services, Suppliers, and Customers to help translate data center requirements and site constraints into practical, reliable, and scalable product solutions.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $71,000 - $105,000 a year.

What you'll do:
Data Center Hot Aisle Containment Product Development
• Participate in the development of new Hot Aisle Containment product platforms, kits, and configurable architectures using Eaton's structured NPD process.
• Assist in the design and documentation of HAC systems, including support structures, doors, panels, sealing solutions, and mounting interfaces.
• Support the translation of customer and market requirements into technical specifications and design requirements.
• Contribute to project schedules, cost objectives, risk assessments, and product development deliverables.
Mechanical Design & Analysis
• Design structural and sheet metal components for data center containment systems, including building-mounted and freestanding structures.
• Create and maintain 3D parametric models and 2D production drawings in accordance with ISO and ASME Y14 standards (Creo preferred).
• Select appropriate materials, finishes, coatings, and manufacturing processes to meet performance and cost objectives.
• Perform engineering calculations related to structural loads, deflection, anchoring, and system performance.
• Support FEA and CFD analysis activities to evaluate:
o Structural integrity and compliance
o Thermal and airflow containment performance
o Material optimization and product robustness
Verification, Validation & Compliance
• Support the development and execution of verification and validation plans for Hot Aisle Containment products.
• Coordinate and participate in structural, functional, and thermal testing activities.
• Analyze test results and assist in implementing design improvements and corrective actions.
• Support compliance activities related to building codes, seismic requirements, fire protection considerations, and applicable industry standards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of installation guides, assembly instructions, technical documentation, and engineering change documentation.
• Work closely with manufacturing, procurement, suppliers, and field personnel to resolve design and production issues.
• Contribute to cost reduction, standardization, modularization, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Support continuous improvement efforts within Eaton's product development processes.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution OR Associate's degree with minimum of three (3) years of experience in mechanical product design, product development, or related engineering roles.

You will set yourself apart by demonstrating some or all of the following:
  • Experience with Data Center Hot Aisle Containment systems or related data center infrastructure products.
  • Knowledge of structural steel and sheet metal design principles.
  • Familiarity with load path analysis, fastening methods, and connection design.
  • Experience supporting product development through verification and validation testing.
  • Exposure to manufacturing processes including:
    o Sheet metal fabrication
    o Welding
    o Aluminum extrusions
    o Plastic injection molding
    o Machining and casting
  • Familiarity with architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
  • Experience working with suppliers and manufacturing teams to support product development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience using FEA and/or CFD analysis tools.

Position Success Criteria:
  • Experience with sheet metal, structural systems, or engineered product design.
  • Proficiency with 3D parametric CAD software (Creo preferred).
  • Familiarity with engineering tools and methodologies such as DFMEA, DFMA, Voice of Customer, and Design for Six Sigma.
  • Understanding of quality systems and engineering documentation practices.
  • Ability to interpret customer requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills. #LI-LR1
