An Internship in Credit Risk Modeling is a temporary position, usually for students or recent graduates, where you work with financial institutions to understand and help develop models that predict the likelihood of borrowers defaulting on loans. Interns typically assist in analyzing data, building statistical models, and supporting risk assessment processes. This role provides hands-on experience with financial data, programming, and model validation, making it valuable for those interested in finance, statistics, or data science. It also offers exposure to regulatory requirements and real-world risk management practices.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship in credit risk modeling?

As an intern in Credit Risk Modeling, you'll typically assist with statistical analysis, data preparation, and validation of risk models used by the organization to evaluate creditworthiness. You may support senior analysts in building or refining predictive models using programming languages like Python or R, and work with large datasets to uncover trends in borrower behavior. Interns often collaborate with risk analysts, data scientists, and IT teams, gaining exposure to both technical and business perspectives. Job description

About Clear Street:
Clear Street is modernizing the brokerage ecosystem. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is a diversified financial services firm replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets.
We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today's complex, global market. Our platform is fully integrated with central clearing houses and exchanges to support billions in trading volume per day. We've agonized about our data model abstractions, created horizontal scalability, and crafted thoughtful APIs. All so we can provide a best-in-class experience for our clients.
By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we're building the essentials to compete in today's fast-paced markets.
As Director of Credit Risk at Clear Street, you will be a senior leader within the Risk Management Team, responsible for shaping and executing the firm's credit risk strategy as it scales. This role requires a seasoned professional who can independently manage a complex, institutional client portfolio, serve as a point of contact for regulators and auditors, and drive the continued evolution of the firm's credit risk framework.
About the Team
The Credit Risk Team serves as a key function of Clear Street's risk management framework. The Team enforces a strong credit culture by managing and mitigating the firm's counterparty risk to enable the firm to grow in a scalable and prudent manner.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the credit and financial strength of the firm's prospective counterparties by performing fundamental credit analysis using both quantitative and qualitative factors.
  • Monitor credit risk exposures across our client base on a daily basis. Perform exposure analysis regularly in order to assess portfolio concentrations or trends.
  • Recommend and communicate credit exposure appetite across trading products utilizing internal policies and methodologies.
  • Serve as the liaison for regulatory examinations, audits, and inquiries - including interactions with the SEC, FINRA, and other relevant regulators - preparing documentation, responding to findings, and ensuring timely remediation.
  • Collaborate with Sales & Trading, Legal, Operations and Compliance departments for client due diligence meetings, legal negotiations for traded products and team efficiency projects.

Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics or any other quantitative fields. Master's degree or CFA is a plus.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in credit risk management experience at a prime brokerage, broker-dealer or investment bank.
  • Proven experience interfacing directly with regulators (SEC, FINRA) and external auditors - including leading exam responses and managing audit deliverables.
  • Deep expertise in counterparty credit risk across prime brokerage products including securities financing, margin lending, derivatives, cleared products, and digital assets.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to communicate complex risk issues clearly and credibly to senior leadership, clients, and external stakeholders.

The Base Salary Range is $180,000 - $250,000. These ranges are representative of the starting base salaries for this role at Clear Street. Which range a candidate fits into and where a candidate falls in the range will be based on job related factors such as relevant experience, skills, and location. These ranges represent Base Salary only, which is just one element of Clear Street's total compensation. The ranges stated do not include other factors of total compensation such as bonuses or equity.
At Clear Street, we offer competitive compensation packages, company equity, 401k matching, gender neutral parental leave, and full medical, dental and vision insurance. Our belief has always been that we are better as a business when we are all together in person. We are requiring employees to be in the office 4 days per week. In-office benefits include lunch stipends, fully stocked kitchens, happy hours, a great location, and amazing views.
Our top priority is our people. We're continuously investing in a culture that promotes collaboration. We help each other through challenges and celebrate each other's successes. We believe that modern workplaces succeed by virtue of having high-performance workforces that are diverse - in ideas, in cultures, and in experiences. We put in the effort to make such a workplace a daily reality and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. #LI-Hybrid
