Job description

About the role
The Systems Engineering role requires passion and drive to work towards enabling distributed operations of unmanned and autonomous vehicles in the maritime environment. This role requires an understanding of sensors, software, and actuators and how to apply these tools to create functional systems for autonomous robotics.
Many of our projects focus on using sensor-informed models running onboard unmanned platforms (e.g., unmanned surface vessels and unmanned underwater vessels) to make real-time assessments of mission goals and provide the operators of unmanned systems with decision aids to maximize mission outcomes. Executing this approach for distributed maritime operations, which involve multiple unmanned or autonomous systems operating together to achieve a given mission, requires a systems-of-systems modeling and simulation approach. Therefore, we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in extracting critical data from dense sources (e.g., modeling and simulation tools, sensors, and/or machine learning approaches) and translating that into actionable, mission-level information for autonomous decision making onboard autonomous systems.
Integer's operating model is to turn academic science and technology research topics into tangible technology for the Department of Defense. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve both internal and customer project goals, all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.
What you'll do
  • Work with sensor data to develop tools for unmanned and autonomous platforms to perceive and navigate their environment to complete high-level mission outcomes.
  • Work with team to conduct research leveraging models and simulations of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs)
  • Provide domain knowledge for distributed systems and systems engineering including technical analysis and software development.
  • Use prior experience and hands-on software development skills to develop various software-based products for both internal and customer projects.
  • Articulate research progress and requirements to non-expert personnel (such as customers, government representatives, project managers, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring project stakeholders understand developed products function.
  • Work with project managers and articulate development time estimates.
  • Design, document, develop, and integrate software in a wide range of languages and how the software affects the unmanned system as a whole.
  • Participate in code reviews of developed software.
  • Participate in collaborative software development efforts in a Linux environment.
  • Provide feedback on physical autonomous platform requirements and design.
  • Perform research, review technical documentation, and discuss with required team members.

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a US DoD Secret clearance.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Either 4+ years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor's Degree; OR Graduate Degree

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with unmanned and autonomous systems research involving maritime autonomous systems such as uncrewed surface vessels (USVs).
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or ROS 2 software libraries.
  • Experience with autonomy frameworks such as OpenAUV.
  • Experience with the application of artificial intelligence to intelligent control and decision making of autonomous systems.
  • Experience with digital prototyping and simulation of collaborative autonomous systems in digital environments.
