Internship Computer Science Startup information

What does an internship at a computer science startup involve?

An internship at a computer science startup typically involves working on real-world projects, collaborating with experienced engineers, and contributing to software development tasks. Interns may help with coding, debugging, testing, or developing new features, and are often exposed to various aspects of the business, such as product design and customer feedback. Startups usually offer a fast-paced, hands-on learning environment where interns can gain valuable technical and professional skills while making a meaningful impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern at a computer science startup?

To thrive as an intern at a computer science startup, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and ideally, coursework or experience in areas like algorithms, data structures, or web development. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and common programming languages such as Python or JavaScript is often required. Initiative, adaptability, and strong communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating in a fast-paced, innovative environment. These skills and qualities enable interns to contribute effectively, learn quickly, and grow within the dynamic culture of a startup.

What types of projects or tasks do computer science interns typically work on at startups?

Computer science interns at startups often work on a variety of hands-on projects, such as building new features, fixing bugs, or prototyping innovative ideas. Because startups tend to have smaller teams, interns may have the opportunity to contribute code directly to the product and collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and sometimes even founders. This environment fosters rapid learning and exposure to the full software development lifecycle. Interns may also participate in code reviews, daily standups, and brainstorming sessions, making their work both impactful and dynamic.

Job description

Job Summary:
Formlabs is a company focused on revolutionizing digital manufacturing through innovative 3D printing technology. They are seeking a Startup Founder to act as a mini-CEO, responsible for identifying and scaling new product lines and ventures, while leading multi-disciplinary teams to drive business outcomes.
Responsibilities:
• Define Product Strategy & Vision: Act as the ultimate Product Owner, creating products and services that define the future of digital manufacturing by identifying unmet user needs and high-potential market gaps.
• Own Business Outcomes: Don’t just manage projects—drive P&L results by identifying new market opportunities and scaling existing business units.
• Build & Lead: Create and lead multi-disciplinary teams of talented engineers, operators, and designers. Hire and mentor the next generation of Formlabs leaders.
• Take Decisive Action: Make crucial, high-stakes decisions that directly impact our core technology and business trajectory.
• Embrace the Ambiguity: Work at the intersection of complex disciplines (engineering, sales, manufacturing, marketing) and take full ownership to get the job done.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Proven Entrepreneurial Experience: You have previously built a business or significant venture (technology startup experience is ideal), demonstrating a high tolerance for risk and a bias for action.
• Comfort with Breadth: You have direct experience creating multi-disciplinary technology products and understand the full lifecycle from ideation to scale.
• Ownership & Hustle: You possess the 'get it done' mindset—the hustle to do whatever it takes, whether it’s pitching a customer, setting up a supply chain, or debugging a prototype.
• Adaptive Leadership: You excel at both hiring and leading teams and are energized by a constantly changing, high-standard environment.
Preferred:
• Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Degree, or related
• Entrepreneurial experience, such as founding your own business.
• MBA or experience in a consulting role
• Familiarity with manufacturing, regulatory, or product standards and compliance in industries like healthcare, pharma, or life sciences.
• Experience with 3D printing technologies and materials.
• Familiarity with Tableau or SQL.
Company:
Formlabs develops and manufactures 3D printers and software for the industrial sector. Founded in 2011, the company is headquartered in Somerville, USA, with a team of 501-1000 employees. The company is currently Late Stage.
