Job description

Position Summary: The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Claflin University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computer Science. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate instruction, curriculum development, student mentoring, scholarly activity, and service while helping advance the growth and strategic direction of the Computer Science program. The department seeks a faculty member with expertise in one or more of the following areas: 

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning 

  • Data Science and Analytics 

  • Cybersecurity 

  • Software Engineering 

  • Cloud Computing 

  • Computer Systems and Networks 

  • Database Systems 

  • Human-Centered Computing 

  • Emerging Computing Technologies 

Candidates with interdisciplinary interests and experience working with undergraduate researchers are especially encouraged to apply. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Science and related disciplines. 

  • Develop and deliver course content in alignment with program curricula. 

  • Advise, mentor, and engage students in research, internships, and career preparation. 

  • Maintain active scholarship and pursue external funding. 

  • Participate in departmental, university, and community service. 

  • Support assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement activities. 

Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field completed by the start date. 

  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate Computer Science courses. 

  • Commitment to student success. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Evidence of scholarly potential.  

Preferred Qualifications 

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following strategic areas: 

  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning 

  • Data Science 

  • Cybersecurity 

  • Software Engineering 

  • Cloud Computing 

  • High Performance Computing 

  • Applied Computing for Scientific Research 

Additional preferred qualifications include: 

  • Experience mentoring undergraduate research. 

  • Experience obtaining external grants. 

  • Experience working with diverse student populations. 

  • Experience collaborating with industry or government partners. 

  • Experience teaching in an HBCU or similar student-centered environment. 

Salary: Salary and Rank are commensurate with qualifications.
