Job description

Pay Grade/Pay Range:  Minimum: $53,500 - Midpoint: $66,900 (Salaried E8)

Department/Organization: 204411 - Biological Sciences

Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.

Additional Department Summary: The Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship sponsored by the Edward O. and Irene K. Wilson Endowed Fund for Biological Research and Education. The endowment provides fellowships for postdoctoral scholars in taxonomy, museum collections, curation, and the science of natural history. Fellows will work under the supervision of one or more Biological Sciences faculty conducting relevant research (https://bsc.ua.edu/directory/).
Applications will be evaluated by the selection committee based on a strong academic record in taxonomic, systematic, and/or natural history research, as well as demonstrated experience working in natural history collections. Competitive applicants will present a fully developed research proposal with clearly defined outcomes and anticipated products that incorporate museum collections and associated curation of specimens. Proposals that leverage an integrative approach combining traditional morphological methods with modern molecular or imaging techniques are especially encouraged. Preference will also be given to projects with a high likelihood of resulting in the discovery and formal taxonomic description of new species, and/or the characterization of intraspecific biogeography or other natural history components of species supported by collections.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: A Ph.D. with relevant research experience in taxonomy and/or systematics, museum collections, curation, and/or the science of natural history is required. All formal requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed before the start of the fellowship, though degree receipt may be forthcoming.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration with academics, scientists, and students. Exhibit outstanding capabilities in personal responsibility, taking initiative, problem solving, and communication proficiency.

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags before a hiring decision is made.

Equal Employment Opportunity: The University of Alabama is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment or volunteer status without regard to any legally protected basis and will not be discriminated against because of their protected status. Applicants and employees of this institution are protected under Federal law from discrimination on several bases. More information is available in the EEOC’s Know Your Rights: Workplace discrimination is illegal poster.

The University of Alabama affirms its longstanding commitment to institutional neutrality, free speech, and academic freedom.
