What is an internship computer science design?

Internship Computer Science Design positions are entry-level opportunities for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working on the intersection of computer science and design. These internships typically involve tasks such as developing user interfaces, prototyping software, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and learning about user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) principles. Interns gain hands-on skills with design tools, programming languages, and methodologies used in the tech industry. The experience helps build a portfolio and can often lead to full-time job opportunities.

What kinds of projects can I expect to work on during a computer science design internship?

As a Computer Science Design intern, you can expect to work on interdisciplinary projects that blend software development with user experience and interface design. Typical tasks may include prototyping user interfaces, collaborating with engineers and designers to develop application features, and conducting usability testing. You may also assist in creating wireframes, designing interactive elements, and ensuring that the technical implementation aligns with design specifications. This role often provides opportunities to participate in team meetings, receive mentorship, and contribute creative solutions to real-world problems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship computer science design?

To thrive in an Internship Computer Science Design role, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, user interface principles, and relevant coursework in computer science or design. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Adobe XD, coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and basic version control systems like Git is often expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating on projects and iterating on design solutions. These skills are crucial for effectively contributing to real-world projects, bridging the gap between user needs and technical implementation.

Job description

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world's most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we invent it. If you're passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!
The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.
HCII is developing new tools to augment designer and engineer creativity using analogical reasoning, and we're seeking a Project Scientist to join the team. The project explores the use of contemporary AI systems, such as large language models and text-to-image generators, to develop new interactive systems to help people find new ideas through sketching, brainstorming, and embedding space navigation. We are currently designing and testing new systems using realistic design tasks.
Core Responsibilities
  • Writing documentation, technical papers, progress reports and participating in meetings/committees.
  • Lead research efforts within main goals of project, and help coordinate interactions with other team members and universities.
  • Acts as team leader, providing project management direction
  • Contributor in developing and documenting research findings and collaborator in writing scientific papers
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Propose and lead independent research goals within scope of projects.

Adaptability, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. We are in search of a team member who can effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree preferred.
  • 5-8 years of research experience required.
  • Excellent communication, project management and analytical skills.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
