Internship Computer Science Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Computer Science Design, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Internship Computer Science Design role, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, user interface principles, and relevant coursework in computer science or design. Familiarity with design tools like Figma or Adobe XD, coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and basic version control systems like Git is often expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and teamwork are essential soft skills for collaborating on projects and iterating on design solutions. These skills are crucial for effectively contributing to real-world projects, bridging the gap between user needs and technical implementation.

What are Internship Computer Science Design positions?

Internship Computer Science Design positions are entry-level opportunities for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience working on the intersection of computer science and design. These internships typically involve tasks such as developing user interfaces, prototyping software, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and learning about user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) principles. Interns gain hands-on skills with design tools, programming languages, and methodologies used in the tech industry. The experience helps build a portfolio and can often lead to full-time job opportunities.

Job description

About the Company

This organization designs and manufactures custom industrial equipment used in process-driven manufacturing environments. Their systems support customers that require highly engineered solutions involving mechanical assemblies, process piping, and specialized production equipment.

The company offers a hands-on engineering environment where designers work closely with experienced engineers, production teams, and purchasing to bring equipment from concept through manufacturing. Because products are custom-built rather than mass-produced, employees have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of projects and gain exposure to mechanical design, fabrication processes, system layouts, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This role is ideal for someone looking to build a long-term engineering career while developing advanced CAD and mechanical design skills. The company provides mentorship, technical training, and opportunities to work directly on equipment that is designed and manufactured in the United States.

Position Overview

The Mechanical Drafter / CAD Designer will support the engineering team by creating detailed manufacturing drawings, process drawings, 3D models, and bills of materials for custom industrial equipment. This individual will collaborate with engineers and manufacturing personnel to ensure designs are accurate, functional, and production-ready.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings
  • Generate fabrication, assembly, and process drawings
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Support engineering changes and design improvements
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering, production, and purchasing teams
  • Assist with prototype development and continuous improvement projects

Ideal Background

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, Creo, or similar 3D CAD software
  • Understanding of mechanical drawings and manufacturing processes
  • Exposure to industrial equipment, process piping, plumbing systems, or sanitary piping is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Desire to learn and grow within a mechanical engineering environment

Why Someone Would Be Interested

  • Opportunity to design custom equipment rather than repetitive products
  • Direct exposure to engineering, manufacturing, and fabrication teams
  • Strong mentorship from experienced engineers
  • Career growth into more advanced design and engineering responsibilities
  • Hands-on involvement with equipment built domestically for specialized industrial applications
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, PTO, and technical development opportunities
