Job description

The Embedded Systems Engineer I is responsible for leading and following through on electronics projects in Friction Management (FM), assisting the Mechanical team in electronics aspects of their projects, addressing field and customer concerns, and leading sustaining and new product development projects as needed. The projects will involve design and support of friction modifier application control and monitoring systems in railroads using embedded electronics as well as design and support of various sensors for the same applications.

Responsibilities (Essential Functions): 

1. Responsible for the development and (or) approval of embedded electronics systems including concept, simulation, prototyping, development, and test.
2. Hardware design activities including design, simulation, documentation and prototyping.
3. Design and revision of embedded firmware and operating systems (C, FreeRTOS, Linux, etc).
4. Manage sustaining engineering and new product development projects within the electronics team.
5. Interact with third-party design partners to optimize outsourced designs and collaborate
6. Provide technical support to sales, customer service, field service, and field applications groups.
7. Evaluate failures on returned and fielded systems and assist in the implementation of solutions.
8. Perform verification and validation testing on prototypes and completed systems.
9. Some travel to customer and supplier sites is required.
10. Produce technical documentation for products including user manuals, data sheets, and troubleshooting guides.
11. Provide support for administration of remotely monitored friction control assets as needed
12. Additional duties as assigned.

Experience, Education, & License Requirements: 

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering is required.
• 3-6 years of work experience in an electrical and (or) computer engineering capacity focusing on analog and digital circuit design, electro-mechanical systems & wireless connectivity predominantly with cellular communications.
• Experience using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and analog-to-digital data acquisition is essential.
• Experience with electronics engineering software such as Altium, OrCAD, and SPICE.
• Experience with PCB design using Altium (preferred) or similar.
• Experience with 8/16/32 bit microcontrollers, as well as higher level single-board computers such as Raspberry Pi, Arduina and Beaglebone.
• Experience with battery powered low-power embedded electronics for remote applications using solar or similar charging methods
• Experience in developing firmware and software development is desired, preferably C, C#, Python.
• Experience with EMC testing and mitigation techniques is desired.
