Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The College of Science and Technology at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for a dynamic and forward-thinking Chairperson of the Department of Applied Engineering Technology. The ideal candidate will possess a distinguished record of scholarship and research; demonstrate a deep appreciation for the integration of learning, discovery, and engagement; and have extensive experience in higher education, including securing extramural funding. The preferred start date is August 2026 or earlier. This is a full-time administrative position with a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership to strengthen and expand the department's academic, research, and service missions. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in applied engineering technology, automotive engineering technology, computer graphics technology, or a closely related field; a strong commitment to student success; and an open, collaborative approach to management and professional leadership. Familiarity with ABET accreditation processes and standards is preferred.
Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Science and Technology, the Department Chair is expected to provide leadership and foster excellence in all departmental efforts. Some of the Chair's responsibilities include promoting student success; student recruitment and mentoring; ensuring quality undergraduate and graduate programs; faculty workload assignment, faculty recruitment, mentoring, development, evaluation, and promotion; supporting faculty research, teaching, and service; providing oversight and stewardship for the administrative, financial, and academic programs; engaging faculty in strategic planning; program assessment and reporting; maintaining program accreditation, and teaching.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a 1890 land-grant doctoral research university with an enrollment of ~15,275 dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology enrolls over 2514 students. It is a national leader that serves and engages the citizens of the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the world through preeminence in science and technology education, research, discovery, and innovation. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, and the PhD program of Applied Science Technology.
The Department of Applied Engineering Technology (AET) serves approximately 400 students across five degree programs: the B.S. in Applied Engineering Technology, B.S. in Automotive Engineering Technology, B.S. in Computer Graphics Technology, M.S. in Technology Management, and Ph.D. in Applied Science and Technology with a concentration in Technology Management. The Department's mission is to prepare students for impactful careers as innovators and leaders who transform society through the application of technology. AET advances knowledge through applied research while developing innovative and responsible solutions to global challenges. The Department's vision is to be a preeminent, learner-centered community that equips graduates to become future technology innovators and industry leaders. Minimum Requirements
Candidate must have a Doctoral Degree in Applied Engineering Technology, Automotive Engineering Technology, Computer Graphics Technology, mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering, or a closely related field and a record of scholarly activity commensurate with appointment as a professor or associate professor.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Candidates with the following are preferred:
1) Experience in securing extramural funding and fundraising
2) Five (5) years of experience teaching and/or administrative experience in an ABET-accredited program
3) An established record of research, publications, and professional accomplishments in applied engineering technology, mechanical, chemical, or industrial engineering, or a closely related field
4) Experience with pursuing/maintaining ABET accreditation is required.
Required License or Certification Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. On-site (Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site)
