Job description

Job Title: Senior Protection & Control Engineer
Location: Trussville, Alabama
Department: Engineering / Power Systems

Lead Critical Protection and Control Projects

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Protection & Control (P&C) Engineer to join our team in Trussville, Alabama. In this role, you will lead the design, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems that support electric utility substations and critical power infrastructure. You will work closely with utility customers, project managers, designers, and field personnel to deliver reliable, safe, and high-quality solutions.

This position is ideal for a highly skilled engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, mentoring others, and seeing projects through from concept to commissioning.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of protection and control systems for substations and utility projects.
  • Prepare and review protection one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay logic, trip/close schemes, and control house drawings.
  • Develop relay settings, protection philosophies, and coordination studies as needed.
  • Support SCADA and substation communication integration with protection and control systems.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawing packages, field redlines, and as-built documentation.
  • Coordinate with relay technicians, CAD designers, engineers, project managers, and customers to ensure successful project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers and support staff.
  • Perform troubleshooting and support during testing, commissioning, and startup activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable utility standards, engineering practices, and safety requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget expectations.

What You Bring

  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in protection and control engineering, preferably in the electric utility industry.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of substation protection schemes, relay applications, and control circuit design.
  • Experience with utility substation design, commissioning, and field support.
  • Familiarity with protective relays, SCADA integration, and substation communication systems.
  • Ability to read and produce detailed electrical drawing packages.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and decision-making ability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major relay platforms such as SEL, GE, ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, or Schweitzer.
  • Knowledge of coordination studies, short circuit analysis, and relay setting development.
  • Familiarity with utility standards, NERC requirements, and industry best practices.
  • PE license or ability to obtain one is a plus.
