Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Refrigeration Engineer supports the design and documentation of supermarket refrigeration systems for new store, remodel, and capital maintenance projects. Reporting to the Refrigeration Engineering Manager, this role focuses on detailed engineering design, field assessments, and construction support under the guidance of senior engineering staff.

This position will support CBES' work for a single designated supermarket client, providing the opportunity to build strong technical expertise within a standardized store environment. This role is ideal for earlycareer engineers, including new graduates with relevant internship or academic project experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Engineering Design & Technical Support

  • Assist with the design of fielderected refrigeration systems, including pipe sizing, layouts, equipment selection, and parallel compressor system configuration

  • Prepare refrigeration system drawings, piping plans, and equipment schedules using AutoCAD and Excel

  • Support development of projectspecific installation specifications based on standard CBES templates

  • Update refrigeration plans to reflect fixture plan changes or scope revisions

  • Coordinate refrigeration designs with HVAC, EMS, store planning, architectural, and engineering teams

Field Assessment & Construction Support

  • Perform field inspections and assessments of existing refrigeration equipment and installations

  • Assist with recommendations to maintain, modify, or replace refrigeration equipment for remodel and capital maintenance projects

  • Support Project Managers with inspections of installations in progress to verify conformance with plans and specifications

  • Assist in identifying constructability, sequencing, and coordination considerations during design and construction

Equipment & Vendor Coordination

  • Assist with preparing equipment specifications and reviewing manufacturers and vendor submittals

  • Support preparation of bid document packages, including refrigeration plans and specifications, for competitive bidding

  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers on projectspecific requirements for customized refrigeration equipment or systems

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation of refrigeration phasing plans to support remodel and capital maintenance project sequencing

  • Support assessments of existing HVAC or related mechanical systems, as assigned, with guidance from senior engineers

  • Participate in site visits, internal design reviews, and project meetings as required

  • Support continuous improvement of refrigeration standards, documentation, and workflows

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline

  • 1-3 years of experience in HVACR, refrigeration, construction, or engineering design services
    or
    New graduates with relevant internships, coops, or academic project experience will be considered

  • Working knowledge of commercial or industrial refrigeration systems, cycles, and controls (CO / R744 preferred)

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and working knowledge of Microsoft Excel

  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with attention to detail

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

  • Selfdirected, motivated, and eager to learn in a collaborative engineering environment

  • Ability to travel 10-20%, including occasional overnight travel

  • Foundational understanding of commercial or supermarket refrigeration systems
