Internship Code Review information

What is an internship code review?

An Internship Code Review is a process where the code written by interns is systematically examined by more experienced developers or mentors. The goal is to ensure code quality, provide constructive feedback, and help interns learn best practices in software development. Code reviews help catch bugs, improve maintainability, and encourage collaboration within teams. For interns, participating in code reviews is a valuable opportunity to grow technical and communication skills in a real-world setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship code reviewer?

To thrive as an Internship Code Reviewer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, version control systems like Git, and experience with relevant coding languages, often supported by coursework or personal projects. Familiarity with code review platforms such as GitHub or GitLab and knowledge of testing frameworks are typically essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a collaborative attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure high-quality, maintainable code and foster learning and growth within development teams.

What types of feedback can I expect to give and receive during an internship code review role?

As an intern participating in code reviews, you will both give and receive constructive feedback on code quality, readability, and adherence to best practices. Expect to learn how to identify potential bugs, suggest improvements, and discuss design decisions with your peers and mentors. You'll also receive guidance on your own code submissions, helping you develop technical skills and a collaborative mindset. This process is highly interactive and designed to foster growth, communication, and teamwork within a supportive environment.

We are committed to providing our Co-ops/Interns with a student experience that provides a supportive and engaging learning environment while developing skills and business acumen. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiences including our Corporate Speaker Series, Fireside Chats, Volunteer opportunities and Networking events.

Eligibility Note: To qualify for a student (Co-op/Internship) opportunity, students must be enrolled in their academic studies at a post-secondary institution (university/college) and must be returning to school after completion of their work term with QuadReal. If you are a student registered in an official co-op program at your post-secondary institution and completion of a final work term is a mandatory component for you to graduate, you are eligible to apply with the understanding that you will leave QuadReal at the end of your work term or have the possibility to be considered for full-time opportunities.

Based in Toronto, the Co-op/Intern, Data Documentation & Quality will report to the Senior Analytical Engineer and support our growing Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A) team at QuadReal. This is an entry-level, supervised role: the successful candidate will work from defined specifications and assigned tickets to build automated data quality tests, complete model documentation, and develop straightforward transformation models, using Microsoft Fabric, SQL, dbt, Apache Airflow, and Azure DevOps. All work is reviewed by a senior engineer before it reaches production.

What We Offer:

  • An organization and leaders that support your development through meaningful work experience

  • A Student Mentorship Program designed to provide support throughout your experience

  • Opportunities to build your industry knowledge through weekly Speaker Series & Fireside Chats

  • Opportunities to participate in case competitions within QuadReal during your work term, fostering cross-functional collaboration with intern peers and enhancing exposure to real-world problem-solving.

  • Giving back to the community with your peers and team members through volunteering events

  • Opportunities to build long-lasting industry and professional relationships

What You Will Experience:

  • Work alongside the Data Solutions team, taking direction from a dedicated senior engineer on a defined set of assigned tasks.

  • Build automated data quality tests in dbt, uniqueness, referential integrity, accepted values, and source freshness, against specifications provided by the engineering team.

  • Investigate test and pipeline failures, document your findings, and escalate root-cause analysis to your supervising engineer.

  • Author model and column documentation for our data models, and help keep our auto-generated documentation site and data catalogue current as models change.

  • Develop straightforward transformation models from written specifications, and make scoped modifications to existing models under senior direction.

  • Contribute to our internal engineering handbook, improving the standards and onboarding material the team relies on.

  • Learn modern data stack tooling hands-on; dbt, SQL, Microsoft Fabric, Apache Airflow, and Azure DevOps, inside a real production environment with code review and CI/CD.

What You Will Bring:

  • Currently enrolled in an academic program preferably in Data Analytics, Engineering, Business, Science, Technology, or Mathematics.

  • You write SQL confidently and independently; joins, aggregations, and window functions are familiar ground rather than something you would need to look up.

  • Comfortable using Python for data work, and able to navigate and interpret a Power BI report.

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills; detail-oriented and at ease building and handling complex data sets.

  • Familiar with Git fundamentals; branching, commits, and pull requests, and ready to work in a code-review culture.

  • Clear and precise written communication; documentation is a meaningful part of this role.

  • Exposure to dbt or a similar templated SQL transformation framework, and familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS/GCP) and CI/CD, are considered assets.

  • The ability to problem-solve and ask good questions while working in a fast-paced environment.

This job posting is for a newly created role within our organization.

The expected hourly range for this role is $23-25.
