Internship Cloud Native Developer information

What is an internship cloud native developer?

An Internship Cloud Native Developer is a student or recent graduate who works temporarily with a team to design, build, and maintain applications that are optimized for cloud environments. They typically use modern technologies like containers (Docker), orchestration tools (Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud). The internship provides hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures, microservices, and DevOps practices, helping interns develop practical skills for a career in cloud computing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship cloud native developer?

To thrive as an Internship Cloud Native Developer, you need a foundation in software development, knowledge of cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or GCP), and familiarity with containerization concepts, often demonstrated through coursework or personal projects. Experience with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and version control systems like Git is highly beneficial, and completion of relevant cloud certifications can be an advantage. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help you adapt to new technologies and collaborate with team members. These skills are crucial for building scalable, cloud-based applications and contributing effectively in fast-evolving technical environments.

What types of projects and technologies do internship cloud native developers typically work on during their internship?

As a Cloud Native Developer intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve designing, deploying, and managing applications using technologies like Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Typical daily tasks may include writing microservices, automating deployment pipelines, and collaborating with DevOps and development teams to ensure cloud-native best practices. Interns often participate in agile sprints, code reviews, and may be assigned to real-world projects that contribute directly to the company’s cloud infrastructure. This hands-on experience is designed to build your skills in modern cloud development environments and prepare you for a full-time role.

What is the difference between Internship Cloud Native Developer vs Cloud Native Developer?

AspectInternship Cloud Native DeveloperCloud Native Developer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of relevant degree programs, basic knowledge of cloud platformsProfessional experience, certifications like AWS, Azure, or Kubernetes
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, entry-level projectsFull-time, collaborative teams, production environments
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, training programsTech firms, cloud service providers, enterprise IT

The main difference is that an Internship Cloud Native Developer is an entry-level position aimed at learning and gaining experience, while a Cloud Native Developer is a full-time professional responsible for designing and maintaining cloud-based applications. Interns typically have less experience and work under supervision, whereas full-time developers handle complex projects independently.

Job description

Mission Impact
At MTSI, you'll build and enhance enterprise catalog and metadata services that power intelligence discovery across the Air Force and Intelligence Community. Your work will modernize how analysts access, curate, search, and share mission data, enabling rapid, secure, cloud-native information flow across domains and security enclaves, directly strengthening decision advantage in contested environments.
What You'll Do (Day-to-Day)
  • Support the development and enhancement of Catalog Collection services such as the Catalog Service, Object Store, Metadata/Tagging services, Source Citation Manager, and Enterprise Search.
  • Assist with maintenance, sustainment, bug fixes, and minor enhancements to existing catalog capabilities running within the NASIC Unified Cloud (NUC) and DAF CLOUDworks environments.
  • Help implement and test cloud-native components using containerization and CI/CD processes required for deployment across multiple security enclaves.
  • Contribute to developing and updating API documentation, OpenAPI specifications, user guides, and onboarding material for internal and external catalog service users.
  • Participate in Agile Scrum ceremonies, contribute to team discussions, review work items, and collaborate with Government SMEs and other developers.
  • Support integration testing and verification of catalog services as they interact with ICAM Services, Foundational Services, EPAS, and mission applications.
  • Assist with documenting design updates, architecture changes, endpoints, dependencies, and versioning for catalog services as required by CDRLs.

You'll Be a Great Fit If You...
  • Are excited to learn how enterprise cataloging, metadata management, and search systems support critical intelligence workflows.
  • Enjoy working with APIs, data models, and cloud-native software development.
  • Thrive in collaborative, Agile environments and want mentorship from senior engineers and architects.
  • Are curious about event-driven architectures, metadata tagging, and how catalog services power enterprise-wide data discovery.
  • Are motivated to grow into a role that includes designing scalable catalog services and contributing to R&D efforts over time.

Responsibilities (Expanded)
  • Assist with implementing catalog features such as metadata tagging, lookup and resolution logic, labeling workflows, object registration, and citation tracking.
  • Help maintain and integrate Catalog Collection capabilities into cloud environments (NUC and CLOUDworks), adapting to evolving infrastructure and ensuring stable deployments.
  • Support the development of onboarding and enablement materials for new catalog service users, including API references, training content, and example workflows.
  • Contribute to testing, refactoring, and validating catalog services to ensure reliability, interoperability, and compliance with NASIC's approved technology stack.
  • Participate in documenting architecture diagrams, endpoint descriptions, environment dependencies, and versioning history as part of technical deliverables.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate catalog capabilities with ICAM, Foundational Services, Collaboration Services, and mission applications.
  • Provide support for minor enhancements, UI updates, and bug resolution in catalog tools under the guidance of senior developers.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Foundational programming experience (academic or professional) in Python, Java, or similar languages used to build backend services.
  • Basic understanding of cloud-native development concepts (containers, microservices, CI/CD) as referenced in the Catalog Collection requirement for cloud-native patterns.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs and JSON-based service communication; ability to read and update OpenAPI/API documentation.
  • Ability to work within Agile/Scrum teams, participate in ceremonies, and contribute to team-based software development.
  • Ability to support maintenance, sustainment, and minor enhancements of operational software.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearances as required for work performed at NASIC

Preferred/Bonus
  • Experience developing or supporting cataloging, metadata, tagging, or search services (aligned with Catalog Collection capabilities such as Catalog Service, Object Store, Metadata/Tagging, Source Citation Manager, Enterprise Search).
  • Exposure to Kubernetes or cloud container orchestration (noted in PWS 6.7 as highly desired).
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture patterns.
  • Basic understanding of data modeling, metadata structures, or content indexing used in search/catalog systems.
  • Experience writing user documentation, API references, or onboarding materials.
  • Hands-on experience with GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, or secure deployment workflows across multiple environments/enclaves.
  • Exposure to enterprise or government environments, especially involving cross-domain or multi-security-level workflows.
  • Any relevant certifications, such as Scrum Developer or Kubernetes (CKA/CKAD).

Security Clearance
  • United States citizenship is required with the ability to obtain a secret security clearance
