Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Security Systems Engineer to take ownership of the design and documentation of integrated electronic security systems. This position will focus on access control, video surveillance, and intrusion detection, from initial system design through construction, installation, and final project documentation.

The ideal candidate can work independently, interpret architectural and electrical plans, develop detailed security drawings, coordinate with internal and external project stakeholders, and provide technical support to field installation teams.

Experience with commercial low-voltage security systems, IP networking, Visio/Smartware Studio, and leading security technology platforms is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design complete electronic security systems based on project specifications, customer requirements, site conditions, and applicable codes.
  • Develop access control solutions covering controllers, card/readers, door configurations, hardware schedules, and credential infrastructure.
  • Design CCTV/video surveillance systems, including camera locations, coverage/FOV, recording solutions, storage requirements, and network bandwidth considerations.
  • Develop intrusion detection designs covering sensors, control panels, zones, annunciation, and system architecture.
  • Create detailed floor plans, riser diagrams, device layouts, wiring diagrams, and construction drawings using Visio and Smartware Studio.
  • Prepare accurate device schedules, equipment lists, material takeoffs, and technical submittal packages.
  • Review architectural, electrical, and low-voltage drawings to determine proper equipment placement, pathways, wiring, and system requirements.
  • Coordinate designs with project managers, estimators, field technicians, consulting engineers, owners, and other project stakeholders.
  • Submit design packages for customer, owner, and engineering review and incorporate comments or revisions into final drawings.
  • Provide technical assistance to installation teams, including field clarifications, device count verification, design changes, and troubleshooting support.
  • Participate in project and job-site meetings when engineering or design support is required.
  • Maintain accurate revision control, as-built information, project documentation, and design records throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate security system interfaces with other building systems, including fire alarm, building management systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform system design reviews to ensure projects are constructible, technically accurate, compliant, and aligned with customer expectations.
  • Manage assigned design work independently and consistently meet project schedules, quality standards, and performance objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing electronic security systems, preferably in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Strong experience with access control, CCTV/video surveillance, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Ability to independently develop security system designs from project requirements through installation documentation.
  • Proficiency with Visio and/or Smartware Studio for security system drawings.
  • Strong understanding of IP networking fundamentals as they apply to security systems, including network infrastructure, bandwidth, connectivity, and device communication.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, and low-voltage construction drawings.
  • Experience preparing construction drawings, equipment schedules, wiring details, and submittal packages.
  • Strong understanding of commercial low-voltage security infrastructure and installation practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineering, project management, customers, and field personnel.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines independently.

Preferred Technical Experience

Candidates with experience working with the following technologies and manufacturers will be highly competitive:

  • Axis – IP cameras and video surveillance
  • Verkada – cloud-based security and video systems
  • Milestone – video management systems
  • Halo – security solutions
  • Napco – intrusion and access control systems
  • IP-based CCTV and security networks
  • Integrated access control and video surveillance platforms
  • Commercial low-voltage security infrastructure
