Internship Camera Systems Engineer information

What is the highest paying engineering internship?

The highest paying engineering internships are typically in fields like software engineering, electrical engineering, and computer engineering, with top companies offering summer internships that can pay over $8,000 per month. Internships at major tech firms such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft are known for high compensation, often including benefits and housing stipends. Compensation varies based on location, company size, and the intern's experience and skills.

What is the difference between Internship Camera Systems Engineer vs Camera Systems Engineer?

AspectInternship Camera Systems EngineerCamera Systems Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of relevant engineering or technical degreeBachelor's or higher in electrical, computer, or systems engineering
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time professional role, responsible for design, development, and testing
Industry UsageUsed in training, educational, or entry-level contexts within tech and automotive sectorsEstablished role in automotive, security, and surveillance industries

The main difference is that an Internship Camera Systems Engineer is a temporary, entry-level position aimed at gaining experience, while a Camera Systems Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing and maintaining camera systems. Interns typically work under supervision, whereas full engineers lead projects and make technical decisions.

How to become a camera engineer?

To become a camera systems engineer, typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field is required. Gaining experience with optics, image processing, and embedded systems, along with proficiency in programming languages like C++ or Python, is essential. Certifications in relevant technologies and hands-on experience with camera hardware and software can enhance job prospects.

What engineers work on cameras?

Camera systems engineers design, develop, and test camera hardware and software for various applications such as surveillance, automotive, or consumer electronics. They often have expertise in optics, image processing, embedded systems, and may use tools like CAD software and programming languages like C++ or Python.

What jobs can I get with systems engineering?

Systems engineering skills are applicable to roles such as Systems Engineer, Systems Integration Engineer, and Systems Analyst, which involve designing, analyzing, and managing complex systems like camera systems, aerospace, or defense technology. These roles often require knowledge of systems architecture, troubleshooting, and tools like MATLAB or SysML, and may require certifications such as INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP).

Job description

About the role

Muon seeks a Camera Systems Engineer to join our team in Mountain View, CA developing infrared remote sensing instruments. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated engineer with a versatile skill set who is comfortable working across many layers of technical depth. The person in this role will fully own the delivery of infrared camera subsystems to multiple concurrent programs. Previous experience with development of camera subsystems for integration into complex electro-optical systems in fast-paced and small-team environments is preferred.

This position is hybrid and requires working on-site in our Mountain View, CA office three days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Own development of visible and thermal infrared camera subsystems including generation of technical specifications and interface control documents (ICDs), trade studies, vendor technical management, performance characterization and testing, and failure mode and root cause analysis.
  • Define camera test requirements, pass/fail criteria, and test strategies, partnering closely with the hardware and test engineering teams to ensure infrastructure meets subsystem needs.
  • Define parameters for camera environmental qualification campaigns, including radiation testing and thermal environmental stress screening (ESS), reviewing test data and acting as the technical authority on camera subsystem health.
  • Support subsystem and instrument-level testing, including environmental (vibration, thermal-vacuum (TVAC) testing and system characterization/V&V.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of best practices, processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in instrument development.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with instrument and spacecraft systems engineers, data scientists, AI&T and production teams, and program managers.
Qualifications
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in an engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment, with demonstrated experience with imaging systems and infrared remote sensing instruments.
  • Software skills in one or more languages (e.g. Python, C++).
  • Experience working with precision optical and mechanical metrology equipment.
  • Experience with root cause analysis efforts including data analysis and testing.
  • Experience performing data analysis, post-processing, and test report generation for optical component and camera system performance.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organization skills.
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced environment with new challenges each week.
Nice-to-have Skills
  • Exposure to design and analysis of optical components and systems.
  • Experience with risk management, including risk tracking and development and implementation of mitigation plans.
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments.
Salary

The salary range for this role is $184,000 - $202,000 plus a competitive equity grant and comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be based on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location as assessed during the interview process.
