Job Description
Functions as the first assistant to the operating surgeon during the operative procedure and provides comprehensive nursing management of care during the peri-operative phase. Does not concurrently function as the scrub nurse.

Education And Credentials
Current NYS registration as a Registered Professional Nurse and American Heart Association-Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire and must be maintained thereafter. Existing OCH RNs must acquire BLS certification as part of the training and orientation to OCH. Bachelors Degree (BS/BA). If Bachelors Degree absent upon hire or transfer into the position, it must be obtained within three years. 7/2009 thru 8/31/13 - Employees were required to have BS in Nursing or Specialty Certification required, if one is absent upon hire or transfer into the position it must be obtained within three years. Current CNOR Prior to 7/2009 - Employees not required to have Bachelors but were required to have current CNOR. Successful completion of a RN First Assistant course and internship that meets AORN Standards for RN First Assistant Education Programs. RNFA program consists of a course and internship equivalent to a minimum of a 3 semester credit hour didactic component and a minimum of a 3 semester credit hour clinical component of formal, academic, post basic nursing study which incorporates all of the content in the current edition of the Core Curriculum for the RN First Assistant and college credit is awarded along with a degree or certificate. The RNFA program is associated with a nursing program that is approved/recognized/accredited by a state board of nursing, accredited by a national nursing accrediting agency that is recognized by the US Department of Education, if eligible; in a university or college that is accredited by an institutional accrediting agency that is recognized by the US Department of Education. CNOR required upon hire. CNOR must remain active and current.
Experience
Two (2) years of clinical experience in the area of specialty preferred. For RNFA 2 Years of experience in OR required and graduate of accredited program. Three (3) years diversified perioperative nursing experience, both scrubbing and circulating required. RNFA experience or RNFA clinical internship experience that is consistent with area(s) of need and is current within past three (3) years preferred.
